Went down to Roker today bait fishing for the first time in weeks (been concentrating on Mackerel, well they are good fun !). Fished halfway between the lighthouse and the steps with two rods, one with a two hook flapper rig and one with a pulley rig both with straight lug. It was sport from the off with almost a fish a cast up to high tide. Ended up with 6 Codling, two Flounders, one Plaice and two gurnard type things (think they might have been dragonettes they looked too skinny to be gurnards). The Codling were all between 32 and 37 cm but all fat little buggers, I kept the 37 cm through choice (it was the first of season !) and I kept a 33 cm Codling and a 29 cm Plaice as they were deep hooked and would not have survived, the rest were lip hooked and went back fast and healthy. Some of the fish were double shots, I thought I was in to a nice big Coddy at one point when the fish stayed deep right up to the railings but it was the 37 cm and a 32 cm both at the same time ! One of the Flounders was also a double shot with a 32 cm Codling. I am chuffed to bits as it is the first day of the winter season with the biggest Coddy being just size at 37 cm in the bag
. Looks like it might be a good winter season if the Tommy's are fattening up like the ones I got today.
