Roker Pier 4-2-09

Fished roker pier last night without any success. But it was well worth it because a lad 20 yds from me pulled in a fantastic 16lb (yes 16lb) cod.
Luckily for him there was one well equipped angler who had a landing net.
Without this it would surely not have been landed. Well done to both of them.

Hard lines m8 Well Done to the lad with the 16lb fish pitty you didnt get a pic. Ive been thinking of getting a landing net for when i fish Newbiggin Cliffs ect, lost some good size fish on the pull up.

I always have my digi camara with me, but last night I packed in a hurry and forgot it.
Definetly get yourself a net.

Was the fish caught off the end of the pier or was it caught along the wall?Great idea about the landing net, but it must have had an awfull long handle to use it off the end!

Well done to whoever caught it,I was told it was caught just near the 2nd set of steps seaward side,i fished it myself for 8hrs last night/this Morning and... Blanked.

hi mate,its a dropnet,the net is attatched to a long bit of rope and lowered down to the water,bit of fun getting the fish into the net and hey presto,can make all the difference especially on piers,cliffs etc

If you don't want to carry a drop net what I use is a ripper with a large treble attached to 80lb shockleader. Just drop it down, hook in to fish and Bob's your uncle. Never hooked into one I've needed it for since I made it so a bad omen for me but hopefully it will come into use soon. Much easier to stick in your box aswel.

I take a drop net. used it last year off steetly-right fanny on trying to get the fish in-ended up fish wrapped around the bottom-fish was pulled up by the rope which held the net and the fish hung underneath. we got it up anyway.

Thing is aren't u meant to take a brick or something to way the bloody thing down and keep it steady! Some extra weight to be carried! Never used one by the way would prob lose the fish or walk it to the nearest steps.

I used mine a few times

All i do it tie 3 5oz leads around the base of the net, it helps with conrol of the net, keeps the netting pulled down and keeps the rope in a vertical position so that when your dragging your cod towrad the net it slips in easy as all the netting is below the water line.

Once you have the fish in the net just raise the net a few inches out the water so that the cod is defo inside then put your rod down keeping tension on the drop net rope and lift the net out teh water. Sometimes gets the rod line in a mess if the wind is blowing but its well worth it for a big fish.

I have had mine a few years and i dont winter anymore but do use it up Scotland for pollack etc off the rocks.

Was fishing there myself into darkness chucking huge cocktails out with out success,got fed up and fished into the bay then buggered off just as the lads were setting up on seaward side story of my fishing year
