Yes it’s from a press release we’ve sent out today. It follows on from a commitment we made last February to press ahead with resurfacing the pier this year as part of a £1.35m rolling of restoration for the pier.

This is an abstract of one section of the byelaw. So when it is closed to the public it comes under the definition of docks
NO PERSON TO FISH
FROM THE DOCKS

No person shall fish in or from the docks except that fishing may take place from that section of Roker Pier which is open at that time to the public.

Thanks Rose, There was a lot of rumours saying that angling would be totally banned from the pier on a permanent basis and cctv cameras would be installed so a lot of the local angling comunity are panicking a bit.

Looks like the rumour mill has gone into overtime on this one, we've known for ages the pier was going to be shut for a few months for repairs so how this has come as a surprise is beyond me.
I'd also add (as someone who has worked with councillors for many years) that a petition is an utter waste of time. If you want to influence decisions then the only way is to write to your local councillor or go to one of their advice surgeries. Believe me, if a councillor gets a dozen letters on the same subject they will take notice and they (should) always respond to written requests from constituents.
In the last few years moves to ban fishing from Worthing Pier and Bexhill beach (both in Sussex, one East one West) have been thwarted by anglers writing to their councillors, they then held a public meeting which councillors were invited to (and to their credit attended) and when the strength of feeling was obvious in both cases the councillors forced the issue in favour of anglers.

Its a shame but i suppose the work has got to be done
If the truth were to come out i bet this petition hit a nerve or two still it's going to be shut all summer this is when a ban on fishing will be on but the peir will be closed so fishing can not be done? anyway? more likely they did not like the petition what about getting petition to open up the south pier to pass holders we will pay for access it could and would be more income for sunderlands council pockets

Salty you would have more chance of winning the lotto.i recon the only way you might ever get fishing on the dock,is if the ARC that had three development plans were to close the dock turn it into to leisure and housing then you might have a chance.the other two plans were to leave as a working port as is or do a 50/50 split which would be commercial/housing.
