Roker pier,tidal surge today

Public safety I reckon as last time there was a very big tide with a swell on a few people went belly surfing down the pier and a think someone snapped there leg.

It wasn't coast guard, it was the security guard that closes the pier everytime sunderland are playing and he's on duty,...there was no tidal surge, and nothing on met office, inshore search and rescue (who would have been put on alert if there was) were doing drills in the surf at bottom of pier, I asked them if they knew anything about the tidal surge, and they said they heard nothing, so checked surf reports, and showed no low pressure zones, so zero chance of tidal surge, short story and probably more truthful is he wanted to knock off to watch the football.
I went to ratty, and lo and behold. ... no tidal surge.

The guy who had his leg broke, was on there in very rough seas and a 5m wave hit the pier, and the wash from that washed him into the barrier...seas were not rough today.

its cos they were expecting us mackems to jump in the drink when we got beat;) but we wouldnt cos were better than that:D and i thought we were great on the game and proud to be at wembley no shame there it took a ace team to take us out so well done both teams lads plum

I reckon the real reason is for the council and port authority to build up evidence to support the closure of the pier to anglers...ie the costof sending someone to clear the pier when the is a splash of a wave,a so called tidal surge, the cost of picking up the rubbish etc its all gonnabe kept on file so them in their nice warm expensively furnished offices can turn around and say they are closing the pier to anglers in the grounds on vandalism, the cost of keeping it clean and oh yes...the old chestnut health and safety

The petition is a load of bollocks! The closure has nothing to do with banning anglers it is simply to resurface the pier during spring and summer then will be back open to the public including anglers
