Roker pier tunnel

Would have to knock me out to get me in there, bit of a girl when it comes to tunnels and the like, my mind would have it filling with water before it was even damp lol

Ha haa, like BA Baraccus! Pity the fool mtf, nobody gunna get me in no tunnel. They should open it up and charge a toll for the hardnuts when the seas away

Lol yeah bit like that

Charges for entry could be used to fix crumbling fishing marks you might be on to something there 🎅lol

hope some anglers don't think that because there is a tunnel there they can go on whatever the conditions and if they get into trouble someone will come and escort them off

I think that's exactly what some think Alan. It'll be closed for all one day soon

Do any other piers have tunnels ? I have heard thers a tunnel from S.T Marys Island & the shore,

I remember my old man and me going into a tunnel under Seaham north pier when I was a nipper (this was back in the early 1980's when the old railway tunnels around the docks were still accessible); can't remember how far along the pier it went the entrance was from the side of the pier where the little beach is in the harbour

The entrance used to be in the wall below where the gates are now. It ran all the way to the lighthouse. It was always shin deep in sea water and there were rumours of rats lol.

cant find any pictures of it but was just reading that during WWII they stores torpedos and a launcher on or under the pier, also a german U boat was sunk by one of its own mines just off the pier, Bit of useless info :) oh and the tunnel is gas lit so i read

Didn't know ther was a tunnel in the pier, is that wot it was originally built for to get people to n from the lighthouse in bad weather?

The tunnel through Roker Pier was built into its structure so the lighthouse keeper who originally lived in the house located at the entrance to the pier could have safe passage to and from the lighthouse during rough seas. The lighthouse was manually operated and not automated like it is today.

"Anyone climbing over the gate and getting trapped should be left on"

I don't think this statement will be the view of many anglers, all will agree that putting themselves in danger of the losing their lives to the sea beggars belief, but as for being left is a life threatening situation where they could be washed into the sea and drowned as a punishment for being there is outrageous.

Tunnels in the north east,

Tunnels in the north east,

I have been told theirs a tunnel that runs from Tynemouth Priory up to Seaton Delavel Hall, It was an escape route for the monks when the Vikings popped in to have a bit of a go at us, It was discovered when they were putting the foundations in for the leisure Pool, at W/Bay .. Guess this area must be riddled with them, Interesting though,
