rotton botttom advice

the white spacer thing slides up and free from the wire thats showing at the top pop your sinker on the wire and slide the white spacer back over the wire and down

You should not power cast with any weak link very dangerous . It is called a weak for a reason it is weak

unfortunately you have it mixed up mate, the weak link is the smaller breaking strain line, not the actual link, its a weak link because the line snaps so you dont lose your gear

Call it a weak link or rotten bottom it is not designed for power casting. the ones you use. Rely on a plastic bead to hold it together if that cracks or breaks then what

you are wrong mate, they are designed to be used when power casting, why would the bead break ? and if the bead was broken you would notice when you went to lock the leg in place and so would obviously change it, but the other rotten bottom links are NOT designed for power casting.
Going by your theory then, a shockleader is no good then because a knot can fail, a lead link is no good either because the knot that holds it to the shockleader could fail.
At least my rotten bottoms lock the lead in place and it aint gonna seperate during a cast and let the lead fly anywhere.

ive used them rotten bottoms and not one has broke or failed to release and none has released during cast only when it hits the water which what they designed to do

There is a big difference between. The apporiate shock leader. Well tied knot lead link and a plastic bead . Good luck

i only use rotten bottoms wnen pendulum casting when no one else is around.
my favourite rotton bottom is one i have used for nearly 30 yrs a panel pin wrks great.

you are correct John the old panel pin works well, I have used my links during pendulum casts and had no trouble whatsoever

its much more common for a knot to fail, wether its ya leader knot, lead link knot or whatever. What knot do you use to attach ya leader ? Dont get my beads mixed up with the thin ones used by gemini, my beads are 8mm tall and have a wall thickness of 4mm., but thanks for the good luck although in 10 yrs of using them i have never needed good luck with them;)

The whole idea of a rotten bottom is that you only loose the sinker not your rig or a fish that you might have on your hook, Jimmys method seems a good one and safe to me, in effect his link and the shock lead takes the strian of the cast, the weaker strain line only come into play after the sinker hits the water.
I for one would use them as they seem to be fool proof and probably cheaper than shop ones to make.

john you have a dirty rotten bottom and you use a panel pin to hold your pants up cos they that full :D :D :D

i also use the same kind as jimmy as does half of the lads from seaham as a bloke makes them and they have never ever failed ,snapped they are the best around by a mile for safety etc

you got it spot on as to how they work mate, when casting, the force of the sinker travelling through the air keeps the bead forced down towards the sinker, keeping it locked in position, soon as the sinker hits the water the link releases the sinker, only holding it to the rig with whatever breaking strain you use as a weak link, i use 10 lb b/s line

They spot on Dean, only difference to mine is the bait clip, where i just use a bait clip to clip my lead on and clip my rig down, but exactly the same principle.
