With a bit bait left over from Saturday night I decided on a few hours down Roker this afternoon. Got down there a couple of hours before HT to find it blowing a hoolie from the west / south west but undeterred I made the trek along the pier and set myself up about 30 yards short of the bunker.

Ususal plan, two rods, two hook flappers with small hooks and ragworm / bluey for bait. Got the first rod baited up with rag and cast out then disaster! I couldn't find my bait elastic anywhere. I must have left it in my smock pocket on Saturday night then it's fell out onto the road as I was packing the car away at the end of the session. Despite the hassle I carried on though the bluey was a right pita to bait up.

Anyhoo things were very slow indeed, fished for an hour and a half before I got my first bite and a tiddly Dab on ragworm to save the blank:

Fished on for another biteless hour up the end then decided to make a move down to the barrier for the first couple of hours of the ebb. Almost straight away down here I was getting bites both on the down the side rod and the cast out rod but nothing was hanging on. I reckon the fish were hitting the bluey hooks and as it wasn't tied on they was able to just pull the bait away without hooking themselves - nothing was touching the ragworm but every time the other hook was coming back clean.

Eventually called it a day and packed up just before 5pm as I was getting fed up with bites and no fish, even going down to size 4 hooks didn't help. Even though the wind was westerly it was still chilly down there - I can't believe it is May next week and I'm still fishing all floatied up during the day. At least on the positive side the water seems to be clearing up nicely though with northerlies forecast for Friday night that will no doubt bugger things up for the weekend fishing

I was on the pier today and then went to the ratty and only caught a crab. It was only my second time fishing so i was quite pleased with my crab lol

Unlucky Matty but it was dire today. That wind was howling on the pier but at least it was from behind, on the Ratty it must have been carckers with it coming side on down the river. Were you the lad in the camo waterproofs fishing between the steps as I walked on?

Oh and welcome to the boards

socks,,

socks,,

I'v left the elastic at home as well. sounds daft but the elastic grip around the top of your socks can sometimes work, Bet you never forget it again,

I'll be copying toonboy and getting a couple of reels so even if I lose one I should still have a spare in my box. My own daft fault for leaving it in my pocket at the end of the night on Saturday :(

Thanks, me and my friend only stopped on the pier for 1 hour because the wind was that bad. No that wasn't me mate, a had me dirty old trackies on lol

Fishing by the second set of steps, your mate had a flourescent yellow jacket on? If that was you and you don't mind a bit of advice you need to leave your baits out for longer. I noticed you reeling in every 5 minutes; when you cast out you need to leave it for 15 - 20 minutes, give the fish a chance to find your baits...

Atleast yer didn't blank mate. Amazing how a ten bob bit of elacy can knack yer sesh up, happened to me once on blyth pier, ended up scratching around the deck for bits of discarded thread:o

Hard day but at least you caught something, that Wind is a bloody menace, stopped me getting out again & looks worse tomorrow.

I fished 7pm til 11 in the bunker tonight. Bites every cast. Had 8 or 9 Tommies to 30cm, 1 whiting, 4 Coalies, 8 dabs one was manky green, 3 small flounders, 1 big rockling and a ls sea scorpion. Lug and cuttlefish were working a treat. 3 rods, one 60yds in the set, one 60YDS straight out and one down the side with a 1oz bullet. Only came home cos I ran out of bait. Had 3 or 4 doubleshots. No plaice though, or or anything else to report on the species hunt, goddammit.

You done well to get out mate I planned to fish yesterday but but was put off by the wind just hope the baits ok for Thursday

i think we all have left our thread in the house at sometime or worse have it blow away over the side of the pier :) i always carry 3 or 4 now
