When i was a lad over 30 years ago i used to go digging for runnydown at Hartlepool. It was an established art at digging them. You basically trenched until you cut off the yellow tail and bang shove the shovel in and hoy it up. Hard work.
My shovel had a shank made out of an old wooden boat hook. I don,t know what timber it was but it was strong. Couple of jubilee clips round the metal shank of the shovel and bobs your uncle.
One winter we had a fierce storm and at low tide the runny down were being washed up in the waves. I will never forget it. Runny down by the handful. Right next tio the banjo pier near the Middleton. Happy days.
Gutted and rolled in newspaper and frozen bait on tap for winter cod.
