It is worth doing, i did it along with the VHF radio and then did the half day RNLI training day, all good things to have incase things ever do go tits up at sea

That's a good way to pass some winter days, meet a few people and learn a lot. The RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore is worth a look too.

Funnily enough i was just about to put up a post regarding learning ther basics as im looking into buying a small boat ( warrior size) and would like to learn as much as poss before i actually bought 1.

Every boat should have a VHF radio. To use it you need to have a VHF operator’s licence obtained by taking a course and passing an exam. The course is only one day and it’s an exam that everybody passes. That’s the only course that is a legal requirement for UK waters.
Other courses are well worth taking though.

The one mentioned by Teabags is a theory course covering things like navigation, charts, tides, “highway code for boats” and weather. These are usually run in evenings or over several weekend session.

The other type of courses are practical ones including the level 2 powerboat course that is often recommended for people new to motor boats. The RYA website has all the details and links to local providers. RYA Training | Courses & Training | RYA

The RNLI run a safety scheme called Sea Check, where they come and drink your coffee and chat about your boat’s safety gear. It’s non-judgemental and full of good advice for free. And of course this place is full of good advice too.
