rya vhf radio course

If you are worried about failing, I wouldn't as I don't think they would let you. On my course a couple of guys couldn't quite get to grips with it (despite using a radio for years) and the bloke made sure they had got through by the end of the day.
I think you need to learn your phonetic alphabet before you go (alpha, bravo, Charlie, etc.). I read up a little before I went, but for my course I needn't have bothered.
Nice one for doing it, one less thing to worry about whilst out there, wether someone will want to see your license.
Also, you will feel more comfortable using it, meaning you are more likely to chat to your friends.
Cheers,
Geoff

Nowt to worry about it's more of a learning thing than being tested there is a test at the end but it's mostly common sense stuff.

thanks for the info geoff and ivan. im not 100% sure where im doing the course its either in stanley where the blokes office is or its beside elephant on the tyne ive just tried phoning the fella whos doing the course to find out the crack! it works out at about £80 for the days training the exam and your photo card license which lasts a lifetime so you cant complain! his name is ken muscarella and his phone number is 01207 570709 or you can go onto the website for info and available courses. www.rya.org.uk hope this helps ian and mad as a fish!

VHF over !!

VHF over !!

As above nothing to worry about course is long winded
But good all the same , do a few role plays
Using the simulated situations it's all easy stuff
And well worth doing .
Ken who does the course is a canny bloke
He will look after you.

Good luck and enjoy it . OUT !

I am a qualified instructor so don't stress about it mate.
Learning the phonetic alphabet will definetly be an advantage before the course and just think about what you want to say before you say it! I still have trouble with that!
Equally know your way around the set you are using and all the functions.

Graham.

:) :) :) and never say "Over and Out" like the movies, theres no such thing ... either "over" and await a return or "out" and finished :) :) :)

The course is good and gives you the confidence to use the radio correctly .... then when your at sea you'll soon know who are the ones that have not done the course :D :D :D

enjoy ....

Thanks for that Chris. I did contact this fella over a year ago and he said that he'd get back to me when he had enough names to run the course. I think I'll call him again as it's quite handy for me to get to.

Regards Ian

not as bad as expected then cheers growler graham norman and ling king india leema leema echo tango yankee oscar uniform kilo november oscar whiskey hotel oscar whiskey india golf oscar tango oscar november over:D

yeah give him a call ian if u get the answering machine just leave him a message,i think it was about 9 or half past at night when he phoned me back!

Certainly sorts the Mike Echo Novembers from the Bravo Oscar Yankees and makes you feel less like a Tango Whiskey Alpha Tango when you are out there :D

And remember to stay off the emergency channel for gabbling about what you've caught :o

Hummmmmber Coastguard don't like it :D

Axe, the reasoning behind the whistling was on old MF/HF sets you had to tune the set in so a whistle registered/tuned in then you were ok to start transmiting, I haven't sailed with a set like that for a fair few years now though.
