After a gruelling 4hrs in the New Hartley Open yesterday - and only managing this undersize coalie from the Beacons....

...I decided to have a go this afternoon with the bait left over. Opted to go to the Broken Steps at Ryhope, decent flood tide with high water at around 4.30pm. Bait would be fresh yellowtails, snake whites and frozen crab.
First chuck and a decent pull, resulting in a slack liner. Five minutes later and this little fella was landed....a stumpy codling, funny looking thing...

....then the next two hours resulted in very small (around 8 inches) codling hitting the baits literally every chuck!
Darkness came, and with the tide on the turn, hoped that something a little

decent might turn up.....not to be, them small codling were everywhere!

Then a slack liner had me hoping....but it wasn't a codling that took the bait - a bonny 3 - bearded rockling decided to make an appearance (don't get many of these at Ryhope!)....

...another three chucks resulting in another three small codling, decided to call it a day...

No decent fish, but a busy session.

By the way, in The New Hartley Open yesterday, two anglers next to me started fishing at 07.45!!!!!!!! And they were in the match.......

All fish were returned safely...

Well done mate ,yes that is a stumpy little codling ,I've been in Opens a few times when people start 5 minutes early and of course once one sinker hits the water then so do the others ,never known 15 minutes early ,shocking and a bit sad really ,but well you're left thinking are they in the Comp. or not ? or should I tell them and end up with a potential scrap on my hands .

I did think about approaching and asking - but just thought that they may be pleasure anglers - until half an hour before the end, when he walked over and said - "...this is sh*te...I've wasted ten fu**ing quid on this ba*tard comp...." - and I thought "yes - and you've had one more cast than me though...free of charge....!!!!!.

I had my camera, and pretended to take some feature shots, and got them in a couple of them....just in case they got owt decent like......

not a very good session mate ; think its down to casting (not or most likely cant cast far enough).
have you just recently taken up sea angling?
there are lots of good casting instructors out there;do it for a reasonable price for a beginer like your self. :)

Crap bait that like.

Paul I fished the Hartley Open as well - not a bite from Tynemouth. We all started at the right time but the lad 20 yards to the left of us couldn't get to his mark at the start so he cast over two of us, waved an apologetic hand and that was that. When he came to pull in we made him walk all the way round to retrieve his bits and pieces. Nice morning though.

I hope so mate. At the moment I have four names that are still NESA members. They ALL have the same IP address so as far as I am concerned they are all guilty.

I don't care who they are or who they think they are I will name them when I have the proof.

Enjoy while you can lads. I will when I catch you.

Jim.
