was finishing 1st light both me and a friend had a few shad each while spinning this morning, just letting people know to watch out for them as they are protected and not to be mistaken for herring.

Happy fishing yaaa'll :)

There only shad if there over 12/14oz in weight.??????

no... a shad is a shad, twaite and allis shad, one is smaller generally, and i think both are protected but slightly different discrepansies, e.g. one e.u. law and one someothere rule or regulation... but i am not too sure to be honest

i think mr charlton posted something about shads a couple weeks maybe month back think they are collecting statistics there is also description of the two different shads. try do a forum search and i am sure u will find it ...and do send a pm to charlton to

No offence but that is a ridiculous, closed minded point of view. Does that mean you take anything undersized that you catch? What state would north east shore fishing (and everywhere else) be in if everyone shared that view? Just my point of view but i think you need to see the bigger picture

kenny i see ur point with regards to fishing being the one of theoldest hunter gatherer activity in the world but the disregard of catch limits and catch sizes is in my opinion ignorant . u may now blatantly say **** codcatcher3000's opinion but what if the trawlers then decided to scoop everything up and then left nothing whatsoever with the attitude of what we catch is ours and **** the law . then when u have no fish ....who do u then place ur swear too . if u r catching for the pot fair enough . u r entitled to ur catch tho limits are set for a good reason .( stock control and breeding etc) we have digressed i believe somehow but then again if u caught a grannylasher do u eat it as well ?i believe to forum starter supermaguire was trying to inform fellow angles on this site that shad could easily be mistaken for herring and that they are protected . informed anglrs would then probably not take the fish home and thus avoiding fines if enforcement officers were out on the particular day ...havin said that how does rockling taste ?(~ unless u have nver caught it

@super-MAGuire @Charlton cheers lads I never knew we could catch herring or shad in our waters anyway, until one of the lads posted up the other day. So it is illegal to bag shad,? I never knew that either tbh.

:exclam:I thought reports on the forum were supposed to be vetted if thats the case then why has kennys totally irresponsible comments been allowed
I would have thought we could have done without his comments and indeed his future rubbish comments on this sight:mad::mad:

ryan i am led to believe one is protected at all times and the other is protected in its breading ground, as this subect come up a few years ago and one of the members came on and explained it all in detail

it is illegal to take any unersize fish even if it is dead and washed up on a beach , i think it is a minnimum £2000 fine for taking an undersize fish ( no excuses ) god knows what it would be for taking a protected fish and if i saw you taking undersizse fish, i would have no hesitation in reporting you to the authorities so be warned

I agree but when i wa son the pier and boat this week i caught a total of 14 and they herring 100% so regardless of comments i think the shad would of been safe unless a few turned up.

Very much alike but you can tell by scales and the lower jaw, if you look very close you can see other features are differnet.

wether you agree with this comment or not kenny is entitled to his point of view, and i don't think we need a moderator stepping in and censoring his comment, it is a discusion forum and if we all agreed with everything every one posted it would become a very boring forum, that said shads are protected and should be returned to the sea,but there again if one swallows your hook and the only way to get it out is to kill it then whats the point of returning a dead fish back to the sea , on a lighter note i am suprised at the number of herring that have been landed recently, are they at last making a comeback i hope so
