sand eel

Caught ling, pollack and coalie on them but thats all, tried it many a day on the boats and only had ling on them from our coast.

This time of year squid or big black lug is my fav bait but i dont winter fish anymore, gave it up 3 years ago as a waste of time lol

True story...
25 years ago fishing blythe pier I caught a small codlind (2lb) and it spat up 2 fresh sandeels. I was about 10 years old and stuck one on the hook and in about 2 minutes caught a 3lb codling on it. I then stuch the other sandeel on and immediately caught another. No more sandeel and no more fish! I've never caught another codling from the shore on sandeel!!!!!!!!

I've caught using Launce in the winter, not sure if it was luck or good judgement but it worked,if the fish are feeding they will take it,may get a chance of a Bass (re Jimmy) if nothing else

A mate that I used to fish with on Blyth beach used Sandeels and regularly caught Codling with them. I tried and never once caught a Codling with them. Usually about October, most of the Codling caught on Blyth beach would be stuffed with Sandeel, some would fall onto the beach from the Codlings mouth still flapping about. I even tried using them too but still no luck for me lol.

Jim.

Often wondered about this bait myself.
I have at times found sandeels washed up on the beach when fishing and put them on a hook but never had a result.
Would be handy if the did take them, easy to have some in the freezer

Good bait but never used them for cod. Done well in the Tyne in spring a few years back tipping with sections of eel for coalies, whiting and flounder. It did much better than mackerel tip. Good flattie bait.
