Sea Angler mag under attack again

when I was phoning around today after fishing info for my columns a couple of contacts said i should read the Sea Angler as according to the latest edition the east coast is having its best cod fishing for fifty years or something like that. has anyone else seen it, I don't get it, if this is true then somebody has been passing them some iffy info, or they have been on the happy backy.
 
got the mag ..they are out of touch with the real world,, printing uter rubbish to sell magazines
 
My view probably doesn't really count for much as I only started sea fishing in Feb 2008, but I'm dedicated and passionate so maybe it does?

But I bought Sea Angler every month since I started and to be honest, I've never read anything since then that I didn't find out from either: this site, fishing buddies, or my local tackle shop in the first month,
The advertised kit is far more expensive than your local dealer, and the articles are pretty un-inspiring (who really wants to hear Henry Gilbey going on about plugging for bass every month?) or which 4x4 is the best for pulling a boat?

I still buy it, for something to read while I'm having a sh*te, but after the whole Sonik release review which, by surprise, they gave a missive thumbs up to (maybe something to do with the front page and every other page being a sonik advert KERCHING) it just seemed to lose a bit credibility for me.

But like I said, thats just my opinion
 
We still get it though thats the funny thing! Every year theres a cod special which, incidently i do love but its always the same stuff like how to keep yrself warm etc.... I like last months i think but have hardly read this months articles cos they have no relevance to my fishing, then again them poor buggas on the west dont know what a cod looks like never mind catch one!
Theres only so much it can tell u though and the rest is up to u to go fish the marks. Theres no secret in fishing, Top quality bait put in the right areas = fish! At the min i'm begging to wonder!
 
i agree. however, this year has seen a lot of double figure fish.
yous not agree?
obviously the 50 years is way out.
 
Deans there definitely has been a lot more early season doubles this year (erm last year ;) ) but we've had a lot more big sea action early season than normal too.
Still not a 'Codling Boom' the doubles are mature fish that probably due to the big seas strayed to the shoreline.
 
Don't buy sea angler, but maybe they mean further south, surely the east coast goes all the way from the top to the bottom. Maybe there's not much up here cos those cockneys (anyone south of scarborough) are catching them all.

started the same time as you as well & i totally agree with you, have you noticed they are starting to repeat photographs too .the last couple off issues had photos in that came from last feb/march issues ! whats all that about ? still buying it though but im starting to prefer total sea fishing it seems a bit more realistic ie when roger mortimore tests a rod he takes it out for ex amount of hours and still tell everyone he caught nowt
 
i got this months issue and it dose say best fishing for 50 years with apparently 30 cod taken in 3 days and the lads who caught them where only fishing over high water down at KENT dungeness or somwhere like that anyway it says a litle bit about the north east rock marks producing some fish but it certainly aint the best year for 50 or so years infact i aint taken a decent cod home now for over 4 years biggest ive taken in that time is only2.5lb:(
 
I used to buy it in my late teens but it was constantly on about marks down the bottom of the country with very little ever about our area so I stopped buying it. As people have said the info and advice on here is far better.
 
i must of missed this best for 50 years,i can remember lads on blyth beach getting 30 codling in a match to stand any chance of winning in the 80`s
 
Stopped buying it few years back when I realised how much money I was forking out per year. I feel a bit sorry for them sometimes. If they told the plain truth the whole magazine would be pointless.... Get decent gear, good bait, learn about the sea and listen to other anglers' advice..repeat..repeat..repeat:)

I would say I've heard a few reports of doubles, but that may be that more people are reporting the doubles they've caught. I use the Alnwick SAC as an example as that is who I fished with in the past but, you would usually expect at least 3 or 4 fish over the 10lb mark in the season running Oct-Feb. They have none this year.
The problem with Sea Angler is that to maintain sales and keep everyone employed they have to report on the positive, and at the moment that is Dungeness. 30 fish in 3 days, so more anglers and fishing vessels hit that spot taking the fish that are there and then when the fish have gone. What do they do next? Report on the next 'hotspot'. To me the reports are just lads reporting on their fishing exploits some are lucky and hit a shoal of cod, others like the majority in the North East, not so lucky.
Where are the in-depth interviews with EU and UK fisheries ministers, members of angling pressure groups like the SACN, NFSA and now Angling Unity, scientists, Fisheries groups from parts of the world that encourage sustainable fisheries . Why aren't they discouraging people from sending in the photographs of someone in their back garden with a picture of a mullet or Ray that they have no intention of eating and encouraging catch and release?
Where are the sections on the lifecycle of the fish we target or the bait we collect so that we can see why we shouldn't take more than we need or empty bait beds?
