I asked EA about the laws regarding sea trout caught by youngsters


If the youngster is under 12 then he does not need a rod licence from ourselves. He would not need one for sea fishing anyway. We would encourage them to return it but he is not legally obliged to - as he is not licensed by us.

If he was over 12, and had a migratory trout licence then he could, by law keep the fish. If he did not have a migratory fish licence then he would be obliged to return it.

There may be local byelaws that mention seasons for allowing sea trout to be caught, so you would need to check depending on the area you're thinking of.
 
I remember Chris Stringer catching one in the Wear in a match, three rivers I think. It was quite a decent size he put it back of course............
 
I was talking to a lad the other day who said he had caught a big salmon when reeling in some mackeral bait he had been fishing with near the glass centre. He kept it and i think i would have.

I caught one at the pig farm on the Wear while winding in a mackerel strip bait, it hit it like a train, weighed 3lb 2oz. I wont say if i kept it, but it tastes very nice..:D:D:D
 
Been lucky enough to catch TWO in over 40 years of sea fishing........Not a 'cat in hells chance' of me putting it back if I ever do catch another one. Best tasting fish I've ever eaten !

obviously writing articles for the Sunday Sun and Journal i get quite a bit of fishing news. It is suprising how many are caught, remember these are caught by mistake. Odd thing is, the majority of times they are caught it is by junior anglers fishing close to shore, where sea trout wonder, as with all fish, right place, conditions, and tackle.

Aye I've see little sea trout jumping in very shallow water off Alnmouth & Embleton beach very close in. Can't of been more than 10" of water
 
the one I took oops sorry hooked!;), on Blyth pier 2yrs back was late September using an Abu toby spinner, hit it like a bullet! the one in me pic, people tell me they taste superb!:rolleyes:

Caught a canny few when I used to fly fish on the Coquet and personally I hate the taste of them, even the fresh runners, but others in the family love them. It's either cod, haddock, plaice or sole for me. Everyone to their own taste I suppose.
 
I caught 1 at 4lb 2oz last year on rag worm and as I had never caught 1 I thought I had caught a very big pollock until i landed it (had to ask my mate to see what it was when it swam by him cause I was sure it was going to snap me off)

I knew nothing about any laws at the time and my old dear assured me it was lovely :)
