if you'd been a member you could have opened the gates and let the old couple and child through yourself.
i dont want to be a member if thats what other members are like . if a member by accident left the gate open and folk got on ,sea got up members of public was stranded with locked gate etc SOS :o

if they where all ready on the pier then there is no problem in letting them out , that is why all members should lock the gate behind them when going on or off the pier .some dont which causes all the problems with people out for a walk seeing the gate open then walking on the pier and then 20 mins later another member comes on and locks the gate trapping them on the pier ,. we do keep putting signs up warning that there is no public access but they get distroyed or ignored .

Hello,
I'm a member of Seaham Club although I don't fish any comps. I think that it's pretty good value for money as the pier is a good venue on it's day. I often pop down when I finish a late shift and get an hour or two in without any hassle and head off home in the early hours.
I've found the other club lads that I see very friendly. Having a key sure beats climbing around any gates and fences and you're also covered in the event of an accident.
The club have a rule that you shouldn't go on if the conditions are too rough, (there are better shots in those conditions anyway).
If you are thinking of joining then the best thing is to call at the clubhouse early on the day of a club comp and take some passport photos with you.

Regards Ian

I thought it was anybodys right to go fishing where and when they want to. Reading this post does that mean you have to be in the Amble club to fish Amble pier or Tynemouth club to fish Tynemouth pier or any other club to fish the man made objects they call piers.

basically yes mate they do it that way so you are covered if you have an accident on the pier as the clubs have insurance etc

Actually, I think you do have to be a member of Tynemouth club to fish Tynemouth pier? Piers are built to protect harbours - not for anglers...

Then my answer would be; if piers are for built to protect harbours and obviously for navigation puposes as well; why allow any angler on them as it seems by this thread that only the chosen few are allowed to take part in their reapective hobby.

The piers aren't publicly owned, they are private property. Tynemouth and South Shields are owned by the Port of Tyne Authority and Seaham piers by the Seaham Harbour Dock Company.

In the case of Seaham there is a long standing agreement between the club and the dock company for members to fish the pier and IIRC the club pays the dock company a substantial amount of money for the privilege, they are paying that money to a private company in order to get access to their private property.

Nobody who doesn't want to pay / be a member of a club with access rights is being prevented from taking part in their chosen hobby, there are hundreds of miles of beaches and rock edges on the north east coast that are completely free for public access and provide excellent fishing.

Well said!

It's the people who think they can just do what they want who spoil it for all.

...and it's always sea anglers who think they should put nothing into the sport but expect everything in return!
Just take a look at the mess (and there are plenty of threads on this site about it) that SOME sea anglers leave behind them...somebody has to clear it up - often other, more respectful sea anglers.
There's more to fishing than just chucking a bait into the water!
Nobody is being prevented from fishing a chosen mark. If you want to fish Tynemouth or Seaham piers it's easy...join the respective clubs for the priviledge and the knowledge that you're covered insurance wise. Small price to pay I reckon while supporting a local angling club.
Just my personal views...

I agree with you matchman wholeheartedly, but are you saying that you have to join a club to get their insurance or could I possibly get my own public liability insurance to fish any pier.

I honestly though that tynemouth and s/s pier were ulimately owned by the government (tax payer) and that the PTA was an independant organisation commissioned by the government to police it. Maybe wrong but just what I always thought.
