hi lads,an old an gnarled skipper from st abbs gave me a lesson a couple of weeks ago how to fish jelly worms and shads,he used cotton bud tubes from boots off a loop running onto a bead just before the snap swivel,then the normal five to seven foot trace with a swivel in the middle,on a rubbing leader,i had a few coalies on this method,but sadly the pollack werent showing off stabbs head,it seemed to make a diiference to the action and certainly didnt tangle.the amazing thing i discovered or it might be just the cod being lazy was the same rig but fished with a massive spoon baited with cooked prawns on an american snap static so it bounced in the tide had the majority of our cod,it was also the same with prawn baited hokkaii,when i had three cod when i was having a cigarette or a cup of coffee and the rod was idol but nothing on jigged hokkais or muppets,the best two cod of the two day charter were taken by my girlfeind julie on her first ever boat trips one of 7and a bit and one of 8 and a bit,both on legered cooked prawn and peeler baits,she said my lures looked like jewellery or earrings and she was thinking like a fish(she would rather have a prawn and crab salad sandwich to eat than an earring)enough said

hi billythe cod werent taking on shads mate,or the pollack,they were taking bait,i fwas fishing exactley the way you said ive been bouncing jellys and shads for years off a three way swivel and had success,it didnt work this time,the spoons and statics worked,just cos its old dont mean it dont work,i think the saesons behind because of mucky water(we never moved 200 yards from the shore)you got to try all kinds

sorry chris did not relise you were that close your right it was no good for shads with dirty water,the spoon job would have give a bit movement and flash and got the attention of the fish,somtimes when the cod fishing go,s off and i fish for ling I use small flash blades above my bait with good results,
when your on about three way swivels still prefer the two american swivel way for shads and jellys

sorry chris did not relise you were that close your right it was no good for shads with dirty water,the spoon job would have give a bit movement and flash and got the attention of the fish,somtimes when the cod fishing go,s off and i fish for ling I use small flash blades above my bait with good results,
when your on about three way swivels still prefer the two american swivel way for shads and jellys

one on your main line with your weight and the second one ,onto the bottom eye of the 1st one for your shad

I like 40 lb memory free line for shad no longer than 3ft and make sure you take the stretch out of your line ,good luck

idea,ive been fishing 3foot off a snap straight to another snap to my leader to make the lure change easier,would it be easier to go back to a three way swivel a leader to another snap and then a trace with a loop to enable lure changes,or is that prone to tangles,do you guys tie direct with a leader to the shad or use a swivel,my brain is about to explode,just used do it like this MAIN LINE,THREE WAY SWIVEL,FIVE FOOT 40ILB MONO,LURE,18LB ROTTEN BOTTOM,WEIGHT,and that was that,i think they called this the portland method years ago,just bouncing it,reeling it 10 turns and bouncing it back,cheers chris

I can't see the point of the second snap swivel, I just tie a swivel on the leader and clip it in to the mainline snap with the lead.
You need a swivel on the leader or the line can twist if the shad spins.

Do you have much of a problem with those snap swivels pulling out when a Bigy latches on, there was a few of us and others lost big fish last year with them pulling out, so I changed to the big norway links just in case

Here's my typical set up, I'm no expert but I think the quality of the line is the most important factor in avoiding tangles.

Wish you could still get 60lb Tuna Tuff Stuff, I bought a bulk spool from Jim's of Cornwall years ago and it's just ran out.

Same as Keith, but with a short (6" or so) piece of mono to a final swivel on the top.
Its a nice set-up with a snood of about 3 to 4 ft (starts at 4 end at 3) so after each (or any ) drift of "no fish" just cut the shad off close at hook and tie a different type or colour on and drop back down.

I'm with KeithB too.

50%lb braid through a 3 way swivel, 40lb mono connecting to 6 inch for weight and 3 foot for shad.

Keeps it nice and simple with less things to go wrong.

Each to their own though.

Clarkey, I don't use them swivels lol ,my fishing bag is in the car ,there the only ones I had handy I use the bigger ones ,seems like the lads that have had a few seasons shading don't do it like us veterans lol,we have been using shads for 10 years plus ,the 1st shading I done was 25 year ago in america,and always used the same method,for the lads that fish Hartlepool with Dave lumley will tell you this is a deadly method,and seems some lads are winding up ten turns (cod are bottom feeders )
