Never fished shads before but have picked up a iot of tips on the forum, but are they any good at the moment?

hiya, i used shads a couple of weeks ago for the first time,and was catching fish right from the word go, i think it also depends on the state of the tide and the ground your covering,most folk have their favourite colours , iwas catching with blue head/red tails, dam good fun,:thumbup:

They are doing okay out on the boats m8 especially the orange and the that are yellow tipped with a bit red on the backs of them okay m8

I have had some great results on fishing with shads this year, caught on really anything I have dropped down but especially blue ones also various other sidewinder sandeels e.t.c blue/white orange yellow black give one a go!

we use the moulded lead headed ones like storm wildeye or sidewinder ...
tie a short piece of 40lb mono line to a lead (about 6 to 8 inches long after knots) then fix to one end of a three way swivel. On the other end of the 3 way swivel put another mono dropper about 12 inches long and fix a swivel to the other end of that, this swivel connects to your line termination (the 18inches or so of mono are to allow for breakage instead of snapping the main line braid in the event of a snag.)
Then tie a 40lb snood to the side ring if the 3 way swivel about 3 foot long and fit the shad on the end. (more than 3 foot tends to trist up).
Drop to the bottom then slowly wind up about 15 turns then re-drop to the bottom again, this keeps the shad swimming (unless there's a good swell in which case the lift and drop of the swell makes the tail swim.)
Generally find better fish just after the wreck in the tide lull behind it, this has the added advantage of allowing you to keep above the wreck until it's almost past then drop into it thus saving a few snags ........
good luck ........ but if you don't catch instantly just cut them off and send to me

5" rubbarb and custard sidewinders were doing the trick for Codfathers Father last night with a 6lb cod on the first drop and same again for the second drop 
Just so happens he used the last one setting up while I was driving to the first mark
I was sure we had more, but suspect he threw the rest overboard as soon as he started catching cod on his.
Most of the ones we use have a built in wieght.
As we headed out at 6 pm ish, just before the lock out, a lad on Allicat told us "codfathers father was going to catch all the cod tonight "
and he did. :red:
Leaving me with nothing but mackeral and a couple of nice fish lost half way up.
Probably due to codfathers father cutting the points and barbs off my hooks.
