Shields Open

Shields Open

When I am not so tired I will put the result on Nesa shortly. Many thanks for your good comments about the South Shields Angling Club and the elected committee who unfortunately at times have to make a harsh decision. If anyone cares to take a walk along the cliff tops at marsden you will find notices there set in concrete to say it is dangerous to cross the barrier, but it is not out of bounds in the Shields Open as it is publicy accessible. Like that has been said before, the harbour master agreed to open the pier just for the anglers that took part in the shields open today and not the general public because we as an established club inform him by writing to him to ask his permission to fish the pier on the one open comp we have a year and I also enclose to the harbour master a copy of our public liability insurance, and in return I have to sign a public liability form so as the Port of Tyne will not be involved in any dispute if anyone gets hurt on the day. I wish all anglers who take part in our competiton read all the rules carefully and abide by them; but you never have that. My regret that is the man who did have the heaviest fish and bag was disqalified because he was on the pier before 8am meant he crossed the 1st gate before the 8am opening of the gate; this time was set by the harbour master and we must adhere to it as the south pier is operated by the Port of Tyne. It also states in our rules that any one crossing any barrier where there is no public access their catch will be disqualified and this was the case today. I will reply to comments made about my statement especially the one who says he knows people that wont fish the Shields Open anymore...............................................There might not be another one unless you read the bloody rules properly.

Interesting one this....I never fished the comp but still would like to voice a slight opinion if I may.

If the lad accessed the pier when the gate was open say the day before...and was not informed that he had to get off as it was closing, and then fished all night and stopped and waited for the comp to start at the official time. Then i see no reason for the disqualification.

However if there is or was a dispute about the fish landed during the comp not matching up to what was witnessed, then you would have no other alternative to deem it an illegal move.

Were the fish caught during official match times? were the fish witnessed? Did the lad go onto the pier whilst it was officially open ? If any of the answers are no then it is the right result.

Unfortunately

"The fish" was landed and witnessed by me!!

I turned up to fish the pier today at about 9.25, there were quite a few rods and I would have liked to have fished as far to the end as possible, I couldnt because there was very little room and managed to get in just past the blocks. I could have pushed in further up but that was hardly fair to the anglers who were already there.

About halfway through the match a couple of fish came out, the disqualified lad had 1 codling about 2-3lb he was 2nd angler from the end of the pier!! ie in the prime spot being able to cast into the set.

About 1 hour from the end anglers started to move around and i managed to get in about 5 anglers from the end.

The lad landed the "heaviest" fish 2nd last cast and it could quite easily have been me or anyone else next to him tbh, he was fishing for whitings with rag!! I witnessed the fish being landed and have the photos on my phone. I think it's such a shame to spoil a good match and feel gutted for the lad. He should have won, he had the heaviest fish and probably would have had the heaviest bag too, he had one 9 and a half, one 2-3lb and also a jumbo whiting.

It's a disgrace to penalise him tbh especially when others were camped out in the river some from midnight!!

As far as im concerned anyone who wants to camp out deserves to claim their spot, not for me tho I like my bed too much!

My mate left to fish the groyne 2 hrs from the end of the match and he had to climb around closed gates. What would have happended if someone had come to try and get on the pier at this time, they couldnt without climbing around, would they be disqualified???

Whole thing stinks of sour grapes!

the harbour master agreed to open the pier just for the anglers that took part in the shields open today and not the general public
lets hope the sunderland council comp coming up they will open roker pier for anglers taking part too even if the work hasnt been completed ;)

Sounds to me like there is some ambiguity in the rules. I personally think the lad has been robbed of the prize. As many people have pointed out other competitors camp out on their marks! I personally would gave gave the lad the money had I been in second and promoted to first. Theirs cheating and honest mistakes. How long were the gates open? Crazy you were allowed to climb off the pier but not on; so why open them at all?

is this accurate?
'any area closed to the general public is strictly out of bounds' is what the booklet says.

no mention of public accessibilty in the rules i was given mr walker, the rule which you are basing your argument on. your scenario re safety fence is weak, and i dont think is best timed as secretary. you should have consulted with your colleagues before making a statement. your emotional message does not portray professionalism

This is the bit that gets me isn't disabled people classed as general public as I can Think of loads of marks that isn't accessable to a person in a wheelchair.
Also when the gate got opened surely that area was deemed in bounds and since the lad caught his fish in competion time and not outside of the times stated it should then count feel proper sorry for the lad

so if you are not catching where ever you are would you be able to change your venue say the pier and climb round in the comp time or would you be disqualified were you only allowed to acess the pier as he opened the gates at 8am [lad should of won it, just my opinion b4 anyody gets on their high horse lol]

I think its absolutly shocking he was stripped of the prize

As far as i see it the lad secured a spot to commence fishing within the stated time to fish
If he caught the fish before the start time then yes its illegal but not during comp times

What if he hadnt of caught the winner and was just weighing in for a prize of the table would he be disquallified (probably not ) as people wouldnt have complained about that

If he fished the pier and the gate didnt get opened then fair enough but bad desicion as they did open

I am not a club member nor did i fish the comp however i do have legal experience in my job.

The decision for the pier to be included in the comp was not made until 8am when the gates were opened, therefore the angler who entered before this time took the risk that it may not be opened for the comp and he was tresspassing, however he did catch a fish within the comp times and zones.

If the club awared the angler 1st prize they would be condoning his actions i.e tresspassing etc and the club are thinking this would not be good for there reputation and for this fishing venue in the future so by disqualifing the catch they have set a president for the future.

Awarding another angler the price who's catch was less controversial in there eyes was the saver bet, however in turn this has opened more controvesy.

Legally i doubt a solicitor would want to challenge the decision with the tresspassing bit before 8am so the angler has taken the fall.

Personally i feel he should have been awarded the prize in the absence of supplemantary rules been drawn up for the pier however this is my own moral opinion and not a legal one.

sorry keith but how many years have l fished the shields open now this is the first time l have not fished the pier for a long time and we have never had a problem in the past with anglers going on pier befor the gates open its the chance you take that the gateman dos'nt kick you off befor the match starts its never been a problem in the past every body wants to get the best chance l was on johnsons for 6am and could see loads of lights on shields pier l said to the lads watch that lot get kicked off becuase the gates are not opening what a sickner after sitting there all that time

if as stated the lads was trespassing, why didnt a club official clear the pier at 8.00am and inform all on there they were disqualified before the match commenced,it would have saved a lot of bad feeling ...

The car park on the left hand side next to souter lighthouse has a sign saying closed to public cos the cliffs are falling or something like that if the winning fish came from there would they be disqualified as it is closed off to public just like the lad on the pier.

The car park is closed for cars not anglers and the public
