Shields open

Very informative post by Terry and Stan, more informative than we have had from the SS club Chairman Joe or any of the other committee members.
It was the committees fault 100% for letting the lad fish on, and especially after a telephone call to actually clarify it.

Now we all know about chinese whispers and the effect they can have on people, I think personally that if the SS club are not going to overrule their decision of disqualification, they should at least aknowledge that the lad was NOT was nor intending to CHEAT in anyway shape or form.

Personally i think there will still be anglers talking behind the lads back from now on, and totally unjustly i may add.

SHIELDS COMMIITTEE, step up, grow a set and admit you made a humungus error, after all yous are only human.

The 2 anglers who complained should be ashamed of themselves especially after being told of the decision, and then still going on about it, to me its sour grapes.

This could have a dramatic effect on next years turn out, Seems to me like you backed these 2 anglers over your own committee men, hope all this agro and bad publicity is worth it. Good business is built up on word of mouth, it actually takes a lot to build something up so big, but only takes something small to bring it down. I think the committee need to have a meeting, or even a members meeting and formally address this matter

Lad Wronged

Lad Wronged

Spoke to the lad in question last night down Hebburn Marina......

Don't know what to make of it all, but this has left a bitter taste in my mouth as the rules were too wooley, he offered to right his wrong by walking off the pier and coming back on, he was granted permission by a committee member to carry on fishing, and the lads who dobbed him did so cos they were caught cheating last year!

Tell ya what this should be called Shields Opengate, the conspiracy theories are a thick as ragworm custard.

As previous mailer said - committee grow a set of nuts, stand by your original decision, clear the lads name and give him the trophy... there was no cheating or underhand activity intended.

BUT

SS Revise your rules and don't leave as much grey wooley matter in there.

I for one wont fish the open again AND was gonna join SS in Jan - they can whistle for their £20, they may be the oldest sea angling club in the country but just shows ya professionlism and wisdom don't necessarily come with age!!!!

Rant over - Rossysmallcast - aged 4 ;)

I've been reading this thread with great interest and was just confused about a few bits.

If the rules state that the gate on the pier has to be open and the area open to the public for the pier to be deemed IN BOUNDS and fishable.

At the point in time when the gateman closed the gate after allowing fishermen on and therefore closing off the pier to the PUBLIC. Would that not have then deemed the pier out of bounds as the gate was now closed and would that not mean that all fishing the pier were doing so in breach of the rules and therefore should they not all have been disqualified.

thats the way i read the rules as well Dave mate " IF THE PIER GATES ARE CLOSED THE PIER WILL BE DEEMED OUT OF BOUNDS" Once the harbour master locked those gates he in effect put the pier out of bounds according to the rules, therefore everyone on the pier was fishing out of bounds, unless someone can explain where i going wrong in my interpretation of the rules

doesnt really matter the decision has been finalised and plus the winner there lass will of spent it by now :D just like a professional game of football a disaloud goal wont be given the day after even tho the ref or assistant was wrong

the easyest thing the club could have done was print a pier number on certain tickets or draw your peg from a bag saves alot of hassel

The easiest thing they could have done is printed on the brochure NO one enters onto shields pier until the gates are open by the Port of Tyne Authority at 8am.

aye but still it would have saved alot of arguments its like the wacky races what if someone triped somebody up and he seriously hurt himself just to get a spot its ludacris just draw pegs outta a bag

surely if these two lads were caught cheating and disqualified they should have also been barred from entering the comp.

the lad last year did not cheat,he took 2 fish to the weigh in that were caught on a dead rig(rig that had been lost by another angler) he asked if he could weigh them in and was told no he could not
so no cheating took place

lots of people are just speculating without facts here

shields pier the open what a farse

shields pier the open what a farse

l think its best we call it a day on this subject and lets get back to what we do best fish well some of us lol as for the shields open some lesson learnt for futre opens its some thing we will allways rember the day a good angler had all the glory then taken away from him one thing kev your in the history book of fishing now l wont forget this day as many others and ill be telling my grand kids the story good luck for the futre kev and to all anglers lets have a slack linner im due one:D

Aye Jim, let's get that big can of worms off Stores, share them out and gaan fishing :D

Haha Jim - touché.

Funnily enough I didn't see the can of worms as having anything to do with this comp, more for the comps in the future, Perhaps a breather would be a good idea. We could always return to it at another date.

This post is now getting so repetative, the same anglers are going over the same points
ie, the gates being locked, anglers climbing round them, because they were locked it was not open to the public so must be out of bounds or words to that effect.

In defence for our club i have to say the committee did go to some lengths to get the pier open for fishing on the day of the open and should be commended for that not slated.

Some are making comments on the liability insurance, anyone fishing on the pier during the open would have been covered as the letter stated the Port of Tyne Authority had given there permission.

The real issue as far as i can see is the two gents in question did break the rules and they should have been disqualified by the letter of the law, however it seems they were redeemed by a high ranking official and told they could fish the open and would not be disqualified.

This next bit really hurts, but it has to be said: I think the club has made two fundamental mistakes.

1. First and foremost total lack of signage on the pier gates. ( A simple poster put on the gate explaining rules about crossing before officially opened by Port of Tyne Authority)

2. Making a Uturn on a decision made by a high ranking committee member.

Now as a club we must address the situation and i am sure we will, so could we please for now try and let matters settle.

regards
Terry Wood

My mate left to fish the groyne 2 hrs from the end of the match and he had to climb around closed gates. What would have happended if someone had come to try and get on the pier at this time, they couldnt without climbing around, would they be disqualified???

used to be a notice board on the heard groin saying nofishing port of tyne

Im sure

well every other mark that people got up early for and camped out for should be out of bounds aswell as thats an unfair advantage aswell (i mean being keen and eager to fish a comp shouldnt be an unfair advantage)

That's bollox only the pier had a restriction no were else the pier was out of bounds untill 8am
