Should have been here yesterday

These were the words uttered to me by one of the marina crew after we came back in early in the afternoon with just a couple of small codling for the past 4 hours effort.

Turns out even yesterday wasn't that great. One angler had landed 9 fish that day. Asking around other anglers how they'd fared, today several said they had blanked down at Cresswell, but someone had reportedly taken 7 fish down there, all on the drift.

We had gone north to Boulmer, having just got out of Amble marina before the tide disappeared. It was a big tide - 5.2m - with SE winds instead of S-SW as forecast, which made it uncomfortable. Had some nice fresh lug and rag, with ok viz, but the fish were not playing ball. No only boats around us, apart from a couple of yaks. Be interested to know how they got on because they were close in.

Saw plenty of guillemots, razorbills, a few gannets that were not diving, no puffins, a few seals, but caught sight of several dolphins a couple of times.

Looking back at my notes for the last couple of years, today seems par for the course, with the fishing only picking up later in May. Never mind. At least the sun shone and the boat got an outing.

as you say, nice to be out. Think I seen you, was at Boulmer on the rock's, only 1 boat out, there was 2 yak's out. Better than sitting in the house m8.

Did the early shift at Newbiggin in the yak yesterday back onshore by 10ish with only 2 to keep, anchored up 3 marks , started in 50 ft near wavebuoy , moved closer in 30ft for 1 then last chance close in off church point for another keeper . Like you said its time of year should come with a bang soon lol. :D
