over the last few months it has been really annoying me about the the amount of phone calls i have been recieving with people trying to sell me things,or when you answer it,it goes dead because they have spoken to the forst person out of 10 they phoned,no doubt this is happenning to you all as well.
here are 2 numbers to phone if your sick of it aswell and they will remove you from the lists
1/ people trying to sell you services 0845 0700707
2/ silent calls 0870 4443969
you phone them up and do it over the phone its all automated

Cheers Bob.
I\'ll certainly use those numbers.
I\'ve been absolutley deluged by them over recent months....3 or 4 calls a night.
Always start when I\'ve just sat doon for me tea (about 6:15pm). The latest call I\'ve had was around 10:00pm.........I wasn\'t too happy.....lol

Ooops sorry Bob, I thought you\'d see the funny side, or buy a timeshare off me. Someone rang me just now and told me to stop or they\'d bash me head in. I 1471\'ed it and your right mate 0845 0700707. Anyone got Richies number?

Ian had a smashing one on his mobile the other week from a new addition to the Mobile Market (it is the one with a number for the name-tis a magic number ---de la soul) anyway his mobile rang and he had a look at the number and said Oh Sh-it it is >>>?? again I wish they would f Off....well I was in one of them moods (looking for an arguement) so I picked up the phone...

\"Hello I am Peter and I am calling for blah de blah phone company....are you aware that your current mobile contract is due for renewal in a few weeks time and I was wondering if we could interest you in our services\" he said...

\"Could I ask you a quick question\" I say

\"Yes\" is the reply

\"Where did you get this number?\" I ask

\"Excuse me\" he said

\"How did you get this number\" I said

\"My boss gave it to me\" is his reply

\"And how did he get it\" I ask

\"The electoral register I think then he gave it to me\" thinks he is being smart

\"Well do me a favour please....\"

\"Pardon\" he seems a bit taken aback by this

\"Do me a small favour please\" I ask again politely

\"What is that?\"

\"Do not ring this number again.. If we want your services we will seek them out...unless you are asked by us to ring this number then do not contact us again.. Thank you...\"

I don\'t know what he said cos I put the phone down.....

Needless to say Ian has not had another phone call from that Company since....

Or you could ring the numbers that Bob provided.....but there is just times when you have to have a conversation like that...

I am not sure about this but think the electoral register is illegal for following up on phone calls. I could be wrong but I hope not. When we lived in the centre of Consett it was a nightmare. I do not know why any one should have to put up with it.
There are ways and if you learn them I will guarantee these parasites will not come back.

Jim

Jim the mobile number in question is only known to a few people and was not put on any documentation for the register as I filled it in and I did not even know the number to recite until a couple of days ago

ALL Electoral Registers ONLY hold the names of those over 18 years of age living at a specific address......no other details

Silent calls - these are caused by an auto-dialler ringing up numbers and there not being a pleb at the other end ready to start with the sales pitch, hence you get the silent call.. sticking your number on the opt out lists is a good move, but as I found it only applies to calls that originate in the UK... Any company abroad using war diallers etc aren\'t restricted, which is why you get them at odd hours at night etc.

Top Tip: keep a whistle or an airhorn next to the phone, ready for when you get an uninvited caller ;-)

I use BT preferential call service, takes a while for them to stop,a few weeks or so for me but its fine now only get the odd call now which is normally my bank and this lovely Indian lady never found out who she is.It annoys me as i work shifts and we have a young family,I might be out or my wife might be busy with the kids etc etc and the phone rings and its some tw=t selling something,I think OAP\'\'s must get turned over by these people alot feel really sorry for them.........

Auto-diallers are actually illegal in the uk, however all a company need to do is buy auto dial services from the states. the autodialling is done from there and then switched on connection to a uk call centre.

There\'s not many places you can hide these days in the world of data collection.

how did they get ians number clare?? quite simply they will have bought it either from his exisiting mobile phone servivce supplier or the company he bought the phone from.

you can but any amount of info if you want it. things like loyalty cards in supermarkets. theya re not a gimmick to give you favours, they are a superb method of gathring info. everytime you use one, the full list of everything you bought, total spend, date etc is recorded and over the months a profile of you is built up and you will fall into several categories of consumer, the list of which the supermarkets will then sell to marketing companies. eg all procter and gamble need to do target some junk mail for pampers is ask tesco who\'s sorted buying baby products etc.

credit card companies do it as well. every time you use your credit/debit card, details of your spend are kept, and the sold on to the highest bidder.

If I wanted I could go to one of several companies, and get a full list of every single item you have purchased and where from in the last 12 months or more, all you telephone numbers, earnings bracket etc etc

all perfectly legal as long as the company holding the dat has registered with the data protection registrar

the data protection act is a complete joke, if you believe it offers you, the consumer any protection.

the basic premise of the dpa is that yes you are entitled to see information that anyone might hold about you, but is nigh on impossible to enforce, but gives the government the right to see all your computer records whenever they fancy. Its perfectly ok for you to sell data as long as yo hve registered with the dpa. supposedly you can demand to see your data by sending a written request, with a nominal fee (no more than 10 quid) to a company, and they have to send you copies. This also covers cctv. Go do a dance in front of the local police station then go in give ema tenner and demand a copy of the tape. It really pisses them off but the old bill do comply (been there done that!) as for companies like dunn and radsteet (one of the worlds biggest data collection agencies) they worm out of it by holding there data off shore, so technically claim expemption. They cannot legally do this under the terms of the act but it would involve court action to do it, which nobody could afford anyway.

the act was amended last year and now even includes written records so if you think that by writing stuff down a bout people rather than holding it on computer you\'d be safe think again.

do a google search for info about the echelon project and then be afraid, be very afraid.

The DPA couple withe regulation of investgatory powers bill (2000) are 2 very scary pieces of legislation if you actually care about civil liberties.

take a look at the cookies that are present on your computers, for example. yo will have several from place you have never heard of. some with just an IP address some from sites such as bilbo, advertising.com, double click.net, adclick.net and many more. These cookies have recorded every web page you have ever looked at, how long you were there, where you got it from and where you went to next and added this to the pile of info they already have from credit cards, loyalty cards, phone bills, etc etc etc. Stop using Internet explorer asap and use something that will give you full control over cookies and the data they deliver. I proxy all mine via 10downingstreet.com or cia.gov just for a laugh!

enough to turn you into a ludite

Theres currently some exploratory work going on looking at call centres in India. It would appear that on the face of it banks/BT etc have acted illegally in exporting data to these countries without the tacit approval of the data protection registrar and may have breached the RIP act

personally I can\'t wait for the next installment of the \'so-big\' virus to bring em down

one last bit of fun you can have is when you are phoned by these eejits, especially if they are in the financial sector, ask for their address first and then inform they are being charged for this call. write them a letter informing them of your charging structure (registered post) and then a few days later send them and invoice for the call!

Hej
Why not do a \"Seinfeld\" - tell them you\'re busy right now and ask them for their private number and tell them you will call later tonight...
cheers / Fisho :P

We are with Telewest and the best quid-a-month I ever spent was on getting these idiots calls stopped. I have a code from Telewest and if I put the code into the phone, (you only have to insert the code once to activate the service), ALL calls where the caller withholds their number cannot get through.I havent had any bother since getting this service. In My opinion, if someone calls you and withholds their number, I dont want to talk to them anyway.
