been following the buildup to richies skate attack:D:D am now thinking should i go sharking at whitby,or after skate on the west of jockland,or should i not do either:confused  whitby is the cheaper option, less travel no overnight stay, and i know the skipper very well(as a skipper not a personal friend.theres plenty of time to think it over, thats for sure

You only live once do both, i have tried the sharking and loved it but never got a three figure fish so time to try for hit and miss rare skate.

aye, sound advice rich, maybe ill try the sharking first and try and incorprate the skate hunt with a few days away with the missus:)

Wityh both shark and skate chances are you wont get a hook up but if you do...dream land.

I am paying £260 all in, boat, accom, bait and tackle and fuel up so not that bad really, if nothing else its a change of landing cod and ling and get some canny pics of the area when i am up there.

If your after just tope still alot about in luce bay i am told, cheaper and alot closer for a day away. Last time it was a 142 mile drive, £35 for the boat for 7hours and 4 tope landed along with some small conga

Know the weathers turning cold Richy and winters not far away. But ! I didn't know the locks of Scotland had frozen over (not just yet) for a skating trip.Torvil & Dean watch out he's got his blades on and coming to get you. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

You know me Graham glass half empty then when it all goes wrong your not that bothered but when it goes right its so much better :)

Pulling one of them treble figure kites out of over 400ft of water is just sheer pleasure Richie. Hope you can manage two or even three in the same day.
Fished with both Ronnie Campbell and Adrian Lauder and have had good results with both skippers.

1 will do me and i think once i have landed one i will be putting down smaller baits for other species :, watched a video of skate fishing 1hr 40mins later and the lad was begging for his bed.

As always will report whatever we get good or bad.

I think once i have got the 1st one i will be in the cabin :) just watched a clip of someone battling a 160lb skate, the well built lad was white and could not hold his bottle with out shaking afterwards :)

Felt like that back in 2001 after pulling in a 126lb beauty. Legs were shaking, back and shoulders were burning, throat was parched dry. After watching the other lads hauling in bigger skate than the one I had caught I wanted something bigger. I wasn't going to be the one to catch the smallest. 3 hours later I was pulling a monster of 179lb over the side of the boat and my body was in agony. I said then " Never again".
Been back a few times since.

Yer they say once you have the bug you cant stop. Well i wont be stopping until i get a 100lb+ fish may it be this trip of the next trip or the one after that...i just hope to land one any size so i dont blank for the 1st trip :)

Couldn't resist uploading this pic again:) It weighed in at 188lbs (PB) and was caught in The Sound of Jura 7th Nov 2007. Had a few since and still trying for the 200 plus fish

I think the face says it all really, just the energy to look up at the camera :)

Cracking pic :) i do have one question...how the hell do you lift it in the boat? is that a net as i would not like to gaff one for the fishes health.

Will see you next weekend Graham, think we are leaving at 3am for the drive up unless we stay over 1 more ngith and then it will be a much later start..still waiting on Dave for that one.

Either way i am easy, have 3 days booked off work and all packed already :)

The fish is brought up the side of the boat and one of the crew will grab the leader, then it's two gaffs in the wings well away from the vital bits and at least three inches into the wing so it doesn't rip out. With the gaffs set it's heave ho over the side being "very careful" not to get walloped off the spiney tail. After she's unhooked, measured and tagged slip the net under, quick pic then back in before she gets too distressed. The whole process can be complete in 90 seconds if all goes well. I've seen days when it's been "busy" and they've been unhooked and released at the side of the boat simply cos there's just no energy left to lift them on the boat.

Yer Dave said he had 11 out between 2 of them the other trip best 184lb, i have taken my 20lb class rod to dabble for thornacks after or if i get the first one :) need time to build up energy again.
