fished smiths yesterday from about 4 till 9 had a couple small whitings and coalie had some cracking bites which i missed as well also......but the down side of the trip was when i got a really good knock the rod went bang reeled in a bit slack and bang the rod goes again so started reeling in and with in about 7-8 turns the spool a thought a was in a snag so am reeling and and reeling letting the rod down reeling on the way back up and a thought this isnt a snag gets me line nearly all the way up with the reel ready to explode and just as my shockleader was about 7yards out the water slack lost it i honestly could of cryed the fight with this fish was something else on my gear....so now i'm in desperate need of a new rod and firstly a reel fixed spool capable of pulling in fish bigger then3lb with out the nearly exploding....so if any one is selling one cheap as well than gis a message till then my reels away untill a new one capable comes along .......kind regards

the penn surfmaster 850 is about the best fixed spool for the money there only 59.99 new mate should pull any fish in hope this helps

Pull up with your rod then reel in as you lower the rod for another heave...you said you reeled as you lifted, probably why you lost out...sorry if you wrote it wrong just something i picked up on

And as said a penn 750 or 850 will cope with most fishing

hi mate try the daiwa emcast evo 5000 excellent reel for the money comes with spare alloy spool about 50-60 quid pull in a pig lol the carp lads love them tough as old boots and total quality wont let u down have two and sware by them hope this helps.
