sprat rumors????

that is alot of food out at sea maybe these rumours about the shoals are true cos theres f.all around . hope they break up and dispers :)

whats gettin me is the sheer lack of anything, usually if theres no cod theres allways a few whiting/coalfish to get ya rod rattlin. i may not always catch but its very rare i go out and dont have so much as a bite and this is happenning alot at the moment, even small fish have gone, so far this season i have had two whiting, probs twenty coalies and god knows how many cod

my mate was talking to a lad who has a private boat and he went out yesterday about 2 mile out never had a bite he saw a young seal kept popping up with sandeel in its mouth he also said his fish finder was going balistic with rather large fish

You would be amazed how close the shoals of baitfish can be.
In the 70,s the trawlers were 100 yds from the beach on the Blast at Seaham fishing for Sprat.

could have been chased in shore then the surf was too strong for them to swim in so they got washed up

I don't think so personally. I think they've been caught out by the salinity and temp of the water. I was told on another site that the sea inshore doesn't drop in temp so dramatically and basically couldn't freeze with the turbulence of waves etc...

However, In 1963 the sea around the Kent coast was frozen for 1 mile off shore.

I've also noticed places around the tyne and blyth starting to freeze now.

I've argued this point on another thread/site that inshore waters drop in temperature when u have freezing conditions and fresh cold water running into the sea. Hence the salinity of the water decreases and is able to get colder...until it freezes.

Fish therefore move off into deeper water where it is less affected.

Thats why I think theres no fish. The cod are offshore the same reason the sandeels are....cos they're not stupid!

Having watched and read the same threads here and elsewhere I think I'm inclined to agree

quite a few yrs back we used to get hammered wth sprats up here frequently washed up on beach.

fishing used to go very quite obviously the fish were preocupied but what would happen is you would get the odd good cod showing up.

it could well be with sprat shoals and cold snap we have a double effect on fishing been quite.

looks to me this winters cod fishing is over unless we get a good spring run.

if the weather was a bit better more people would prob be out and you may of heard of a few more caught.

kent beaches get the hammer every year i have a friend down there but they still get the dabs and flounders, we have not had the sprat shoals for years hope this not going to be an ongoing thing.

Well, I disagree....

well i hav,nt totaly given up but the way we had it years ago on the colliery beaches we had it good spring run was something to look forward to but not now with colliery beaches not as they were. this bloody weather dos,nt help but may get better lol.

it tells me how good we had it years ago when you had the likes of tony taylor and ron sorry dont know how to spell his surname and other whitley bay lads who used to fish the blast every sunday morning.
