Spring run

try and get an aerial photo of the holderness coast you will see how the water is chocolate colour ,this is due to when it rains water runs down off muddy banks and cliffs and runs into the sea it confuses the fish, when the sea is rough they spread about a lot more reason why its better in calm conditions.smoothounds arrive early about may light southerly wind best then they tend to move to linconshire coast.

will do mate, thanks for the info :)

I remember fishing on the North Shields ferry landing in the 80's shoulder to shoulder with cod lying every where, lots of rods crammed onto the rail, saw a bite, picked the rod up and struck, Chris Stringer said, "can I have my rod back now", felt a right tit. Arthur

rubber plant, Frasers all fenced off, if you go down the Tyne in a boat you will see where they are trying to stop the embankment falling in.

What about when it hasnt rained for a few week the water is still like hot chocolate

the clay is about 200 to 300yds out exposed on the bottom in some places even closer thats why the hounds are there they are hunting the crabs that molt in the clays and this clay gives the water its colour

easterly winds make the water clear even if its been raining for days

the spring run the other year only lasted a couple of days but it was tremendous

spring run spring weather its raining now.

i dont know much about the hounds info i got was off macky who fishes the area loads with a lot of success and info also off reading catch reports for some time.

macky told me the hounds are only on the holderness coast for a short space of time they are at chapel point linconshire a lot longer too far for me to travel cant be bothered.

agree with crab molt as you say but colour in water chocolate incites fish to come in for some reason.

north shields ferry landing used be THE hotspot in the river late sventies for first light seen chris stringer tony taylor and a few others hammer the fish on frozen crab before the fresh crab was on , got talking to stringer and he told me they did this every year, the day i seen him he he had 23 codling i was new to fishing in those days and was determined to fish there the following year but the follwing year port of tyne clamped down on th fishing and put anti climb fencing up so never got the chance to fish there with frozen crab used try th rubber company for the next couple yearsbut never saw the amount fish i had seen the previous year again

It's all down to sea reclaiming the cliffs and the erosion that's happening all the way along the Holderness coast,I was down last spring and went to Hilston to fish and was shocked by the amount of erosion their, most of the coastal roadway has fallen into the sea.
But agree its all down to the colour of the water thats the attractor for the fish.
At Hornsea and Withensea they have increased the sea defences but that only increases erosion further down the coast.
You just got to read and look at the great Spurn point to see the change in sea v land battle it's an ongoing movement between land and sea.
But I have a question...why has the winter shore fishing down the Holdeness coast been poor as against other winters and now seems to be picking up for the spring run.
I believe there is a answer to this.

Because the sea was runing constantly from the east for about 2-3months over xmas. Weed followed and made places unfishable.

why ar,nt our colliery beaches fishing now or thro out winter when its flat. yorkshire beaches fished realy well last winter when we had prolonged periods of s/westerley winds.

interesting thread, why do you think the cod/codling prefer coloured water.

is it - the sun hurts the eyes.

they think its nightime and food ie crabs are crawling about not like daytime when they are holed up.

or are they just confused .

Probably because there's less fish and if a venue is difficult there's less fishing it and conditions will dictate depending on season and cycles. Few years since I fished Hornsea but the match was cracking in daylight with heavily coloured water and results were close til the end.
