state of our piers

Been fishing the hartlepool and tees bay piers and beaches for to many years to count ,and over the years i,v noticed the slow deteriation of our piers and breakwaters, to the point that it is downright dangerous to fish off them, is it the same further up the durham and northumberland coast, i dont know .What i do know is that the south coast piers are safe ,clean, angling friendly, and at night lit up and excuse the pun but its true ,like brighton pier and yet the fishing here on our coast is the best in the country ,but the powers that be do not seem to grasp that ,or the potential for angling tourists. There is no promotion or andvertising the sheer beauty of our coastline and not one penny of goverment money goes on sea angling and all that it entails.Am i just a pessimist or does anyone have the same view.:red:

sunderland north pier is in good nick , has good footing and hand rail

hendon prom is getting all new handrails and landscaping right now , its a bit high for comfortably lifting fish over but i guess its the way things will go as the health and safety folks get more into things

i dont know if the pier will get the same railings

Blyth West pier is'nt too bad,they spent a bit making the end safe with fencing etc but thats probably more for public liability than encouraging people to use it for pleasure purposes at the end of the day the piers around here,Blyth,Tynemouth,South Shields and Wear were built for Navigation and Breakwater purposes and not for leisure use,what you see is what you get

i agree that most piers are crap, i dont agree that the fishing here is the best in the country. far far from it!

Nicest pier I've been on is at Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, lovely old pier in excellent condition when we were there on holiday and partly funded by charging anglers a trivial amount to fish there (think it was about 50p back in the early 90's).

seaham north peir is about fooked lol
we pay £26 a year to access it but it is about to go under resurfacing ect and new marina cant wait till its all done its a good peir to fish from doggies and thornies in summer and good cod and bass in colder months

I agree with gazzawill seaham peir is fooked i was a member two year ago and was not happy with the condition it was'nt safe for my two boys so i did'nt join the club again.Roker is in good nick with barriers all the way along the peir its much for kids to fish them's the only peirs i know.

all the peirs should be mended and railings round ect ,theyed rather waaste money on a ugly ornament or strupid fountain wat gets disused or worse pull perfectly good houses down and waste money rebuilding them nowhere near as sturdy as they were in the first place

i blame the dole wallas, stop their benefits and get the piers fixed!!!

The heugh at Hartlepool used to be a lovely pier. It had fencing all round it. Some steps down the side for boats.
It went to wreck and ruin when some clever dick said it would do the same job if it gets demolished in the high seas.
Well i can tell you if the pier goes it will goose the Marina. Massive waves will sweep into the harbour.
I,ve heard when the yacht race thing is on they are going to drop those big concrete star things around it and tidy it up.
The pier actually belongs to the port authority. There i a big sign saying no further than the fence or you will be fined.
As to Steetly i,ve heard loads of stories about this. But one thing is for sure it will go. A new posh housing estate will not want that on the sea front.
I look at Sunderland pier and is very very well kept. compared to Hartlepool.

One problem is that most piers around here aren't dedicated to the public so the harbour authorities only care about them serving their function rather than being somewhere nice for fishing or a stroll along.
