Still some Mackerel there

Me and my son went to do some spinning off Shields pier this morning after reading some reports on here saying there were still mackerel to be had. We got to the end of the pier about 9 o'clock and had four Mackerel in the first hour. We lost a few bringing them in but there was plenty action even though there was a seal hanging around.
We caught all of the fish on my home made 35g lures which I made last week thinking they wouldn't be used until next year, so I was quite chuffed with that.
The wind started to get up about 10.30 so we packed up. There was no one else fishing the pier apart from one lad who turned up to fish the end just before we left.
Lovely morning and if it hadn't been for the wind we would probably still be there now.

I've really enjoyed the Mackerel fishing this year, I know it's not everybody's cup of tea but I have grown to like it. I use a proper cheapo skinny 8ft rod and fixed spool reel with a single 35g home made lure and the fight you get from the Mackerel is brilliant. You can fish on the move with no elaborate set up and baiting up, and there's always the chance of other species grabbing your lure. I think it's the can swigging masses with 6 hook daylight rigs and 7oz leads that put people off spinning, but done with a bit of subtlety, and at the right spot it can be really enjoyable.

Spot on matey, my mate and I were down S/S pier Sunday we managed to get 15 maccy between us and lost a good few on the lift, good sport and me and my mate were content,nice day untill the wind got up

Both matey, Birthday 29/ this month makes me 60 years young, and I have two slipped disks and a degenerative disk disease in my back, but I want to keep fishing as long as I can, so i will push myself for as long as I can because i wont give up that easy.
