With a bit of leave to use, an up and comming Skate trip and forecasted bad weekend i thought i would chance my luck for a short sesh today. Rang Graham up (bigsid) and as always Graham was as ready as i was to get on the boat.

Met down the marina at 7am and it was hissing it down but little wind so we started making our way up the river. First stop close in for one drop with crab, no bites so headed off and joined the JFK on a wreck.

Now this pic may look out of focus but it was all the mist and rain, when we drifted about 300 yards apart you could not make out anything but a shape.

So we dropped down and i was first into fish with the first and only mackerel of the day, folowed by Graham with a full house of coalie then after that it was coalie a drop every drop, so we moved a couple of mile further out. Nothing on twin tails, pirks and bait but was suprised the water was clear(ish) and the rain ahd stopped by this point but the wind was now blowing abit.

We moved around a few wrecks until at last i landed a 7lb on frozen mackerel. (weather beaten)

After that we gave up on the wrecks as wind and tide was making the drift 1.4-2.2 and just not worth the bother so we moved to the yellow can. After a coule of drifts Graham landed the 1st keeper cod of about 3lb but that was it, we kept moving arond and hunting them out but nothing big for the pot would bite.

The wind started and got upto at least 30mph from the south making for a hard ride home.

We ended the day with a keeer fish each and loads of smaller ones chucked back, well weather beaten but at least we wet aline as this weekend is a no go for sure.

excellent report rich, well done on your day out .... certainly looks a bit rough on the way back south ...

norm

should have kept the coalies. depending where you're fishing, they are often a better skate bait than mackeral

Stingray Today

BIG Thank You To Richy (Northeast1) for the invitation to fish onboard Stingray. The day started grey then wet and grey (Oh What a Lovely day). Then there was the winds I say winds there had to be more than one because it must of blown from every point on the compass and last but not least the sea state bumpy would be an under stated fact combine the wind and the sea together and it ended up one hell of a ride. But we give it our best shots trying wrecks and rough ground. I think if we had hit the Mackerel first thing ( Richies BIG Skate trip) and got a boat load we would of been back alot earlier as it was we stuck it until the final whistle blew and it was time for Richy to head back for work.
Had A lovely Day Out (not)
Cheer's Richy.

Yer i kept some of the bigger ones Mark as they say they work well.

I it was a very rough ride back in, i would say the 3rd worst in my time afloat either on my own boat or charters but still safe and warm in the cabin already dreaming of that late April day when it all kicks off again.

Weather beaten but not down beat i would say, looking at the weekend its a no go.

Until next trip Graham :)

That’s a good photo of the sea state; it turned a bit evil when the SW wind quartered the SE swell. Think yourselves lucky you were heading into it, I came in across it from the four-mile wrecks. Oddly enough the JFK was there too. Walls of water were coming over my boat’s roof and the speed was going from six knots up the waves to twice that when sliding down them. I even had the wipers on heading back up the river as the waves coming down the river were big enough to throw up a lot of spray. A bumpy ride back in was in stark contrast to the ride of the valkyrie journey out an hour earlier when enjoying charging up and down rounder swells.

You managed two better fish than I did. There was a few smaller fish around, with a real preference for lug to the point of not touching ragworm bait.

I was speaking with the lad that does the skate trips, he was saying last time they used 4lb trout and cod as bait, think i will be tired winding up a 4lber from 400+ foot down never mind a skate that could be over 200lb and the av fight is well over 1 hour long.

Still its fishing and i may not catch a thing but if you dont try you wont get and since its very expensive weekend away i will fit abit of bottom fishing in for other species as well ,still never landed a thorn abck ray or black mouthed dog fish (rare)

Good to read a catch report. Well done in poor conditions. Where is it you're going skate fishing, and when! Look foreward to your report Richie:):)

Off the Firth of Lorn, north west Sctland..like i say i may blank and prob will but you must try and it will be day to remember if i land one.

It is about 30miles from Oban and yer i have 2 nights stay over and 2 days out on the boat for Skate or other styles of fishing we wish

Hi Richy, you'll be fishing in the Sound of Jura, I think you can get into the Firth of Loune from it but wont be going that far North. Good reports coming in already and one boat landed 10 skate yesterday

Yer all sounds good to me, see you up there, you can have a chuckle at my trying to land one as you and Dave sit back and take the pi** am sure :)

Sorted out the odd bit of tackle and that and got my old beach gear clothing out as i bet its bloody cold up there in November
