I don't think for one minute they intend to eat such items, but there must be something edible near by when they scoop it all up. They dont call them bucket mouths for nowt lol. The one I got from the flat rock had shrimp and parp in its gut.
Caught one in Blyth harbour years ago, stomach was full of sweetcorn and other (human) food scraps, was a lot of boats in the harbour at the time so I'm guessing it was picking through slops tossed over the side.
