Summer Months

I know it's still Freezing Feb' but even I can see things have wound right down with the Cod...

So where next? what fills the gap?

Not everyone favours the rocks, so what about the beaches? Is this the time when scratching comes into it's own?

I know there's peeps out there who pack up their gear until the colder months come round again but personally I'm going to fish every month of the year

I also fish every month of the year, be it for the cod or trout, it's being in the right place at the right time.:)

Gonna have a few sessions for thornies off Horden and a stab at the spring codling run. After that I don't do much summer fishing, I'll spend my time collecting peeler and a couple of sessions filling the freezer with mackerel, mussel and razor. Then come september my attention turns back to cod.

Same as me i do a bit summer fishing but not loads. I just fill the freezer up in the summer 4 the autumn and winter with Macky, mussel, peeler, razor etc. Fit a bit float fishing in,flattie bashing and sometimes a go with fresh crab 4 the codling somewhere and thats it until october-november when me attention turns back 2 cod.

I'll be heading back up to Eyemouth in the summer and im gonna try a few new marks aswell as some at St Abbs, hopefully for some red cod and id like a good wrasse. Try for some red cod from the kelp at Newton aswell. Closer to home im gonna try and get some wrasse from the rock edges at Whitburn. I had one a couple of years ago from North Row Ends but had some good ones on the boat last summer aswell.

I do the opposite, i never fish the winter anymore, dont get anything out of it anymore and rather use my cock as bait than stand cold lol.

I start my fishing end of March, targeting bass from various north east beaches with spinners and two hook flappers close in baited with crab, rag or mackerel.

I also fish the piers and marsden area with daylights in march april for the large shoals od coalie and launce that turn up.

Once May comes the boat fishing starts in full flow so out moast weekends, if not out am on a local pier using 1 baited rod cast out for flat fish etc and 1 with a spinner or redgill.

June sees the amckerel, coalie and launce hit the shore in good numbers if the sea stays clean so time taken spinning, float fishing or boat fishing for them.

In between that i also hit some local marks on the float for wrasse fishing, lot about if u know where to look, in 2006 had 23 wrasse in one session from our arera.
Also do abit of flattie bashing and the odd trip to a river mark for a mixture of species.

Dont often catch anything big in the summer months from the shore but my boat fishing makes up for the lack in size so am happy in using light gear from the shore, bags not counting sandeel of over 150+ not rare for me on spinners and lures when the coalie and scad n mackerel or in. The idea of spending laods of money standing on rocks, cliffs and beaches fishing into freezing cold winds for the odd good cod passed me many years ago, lost interest after my 1st double from the shore.

Boat fishing is where my heart is now, light as possible gear for the best sport :)
(p.s i return all but a handfull of cod and ling and keep betwen 40-50 mackerel a year for bait, everything else goes back)

Yer i looked at them but decided it was over rated and to unsafe for my liking. I know 5 lads that use them, 3 love them but admit getting into danger and losing gear when over turning and the other 2 sold them after a few trips.

Its just the fad at the moment, dont get me wrong looks great and i would think up scotland it would be great for pollack etc but just not for me.

Look forward to the reports this summer mind from them lads, the NFSA comp last year had a cack section, won by a 2lb 3oz mackerel if i remember right. Sure this years will have more fishing that sectiona nd catch more fish.

Summer fishing is the best which will see me:

Smoothound and thornback ray fishing down the lincs coast

plaice fishing during april and may

next month march seeing me visiting loch fyne and etive also more trips up there later in the summer with lochaline and loch sunnart on the cards

Fantastic fishing down wales for all sorts of species

Day trips to the mull and rhinnes of galloway

Trips up arbroth during summer this year for pollock also some trips to st abbs and eyemouth

And hopefully with a bit luck trip to top of scotland scrabster way also maybes and shot of fishing to ireland

So it looks like its going to be a very busy summer for me

Here is some species i want to break aswell

smoothound over 13lb

bass over 5lb

pollock over 6lb

wrasse over 5lb

thornie over 5lb plus any other rays

spurdog not botherd what size but bigger the better

blackmouth dogfish

plaice over 2.5lb

flounder over 2lb

Am going back to South Wales in the summer so am going to try my luck for some bigger species...

Plus I think a hike up the craggy Northumberland coastline is in order at some point

And also the obligatory macky session...

Might resurrect the species challenge this year now I've got more of a clue about stuff ;)

in past years and in my experiance the river tyne is the place as the river wear to a certain extent, fishing the ice house area lg casting with frozen or fresh crab also used to fish ferry landing sunday morns dont no if us still can when ferry is,nt running, also rubber plant, these areas have done me good in previous years for codling ,i can remember one morning in may a few years back fishing in my shirt sleeves at rubber plant getting half a dozen codling all about 3lb canny fishing , also had some good catches church point in april frozen crab bit north easterly sea on. it always goes a bit quite soon back end of march but if you fish tyne crab you could do well .quite a few people say to me ragworm bring them results also during march april may. all is not lost

When the weather picks up i would like to go out on boat more often.
One slight problem with spewing up-but this will not put me off. I,ll take me sea sick tablets and think of England.
Must try Whitby this year-i reckon the ground up there is second to none.
I invested in a new 12lb-20lb rod,new reel and braid last year which is top dollar gear. Looking forwards to another trial with it.Hope to nail a doubler.

Then there is me fly fishing absolute novice last year but this is my second year,i,ll get some waders and try a couple of different waters.
Might invest in a new reel and try intermediate and sinking lines.

Mick.
