Just wondered if anyone out there has used the fresh mussels most of the supermarkets sell at there fresh fish counter the live ones in the net bags to cook at home? Are the mussels easy to get out of there shells as ive only ever bought ready done ones? and is there any benefits of using them fresh?I myself often go to a supermarket to get mackeral for bait and get them to fillet it so when I get back home I just cut it into strips before fishing so i just need to put it on the hook saves a lot of clart on.
cheers stew

Hi I usually pick up a macky from Morrison s if im in and freeze it as its always a back-up if your going out on short notice then cut it before I leave while its frozen as its easier then throw it in a tub with its guts and all someone told me when it thaws the guts and all adds sent to the bait, I had an excellent night once fishing with macky sat in mussel juices not me the fish:p

But there has been a couple of posts about raw frozen prawn saying it will do the trick and funny enough I went into Asda yesterday looking for mussel but there wasn't any and had to but some at a tackle dealer.

Theirs always the the bait that you wondered if your having your leg pulled like pigs liver (it did catch a fish when I tried it) maybe that's where I went wrong last night should have got some pigs liver may not of blanked
Lorry

I must admit i never thought about freezing it first i normally get it the night before going or on the day as you say its a great backup. ive heard somewhere about adding olive oit to it in the container but i must admit ive not tried that either, ive also heard about the pigs liver as well but have never tried it for fishing i suppose if the fish are feeding they will have a go at anything. I used to be into keeping koi carp in a big way and i used to buy them cooked prawns for a treat and they also loved fresh garden peas straight out of the pod but these are freshwater fish so i suppose that they will eat differant things to sea water fish.

hi stew, i often get the live bagged muscles from morrisons they are a bit of chew shelling them but have caught on them,i think they are about £1 a net. also started getting the frozen king prawns, but no luck as yet with them.

Have a look in your local Chinese Supermarket they have a good selection of raw sea food, all good bait ( leave the soft back crabs though they are crap for bait ). One good bye is these Razor Fish £4-95p for a 1 Kilo box, you get about 58-60.

i normaly go down to blyth and pick a couple of baskets of mussel and that takes about an hour its better than buying them and there bigger and that lasts me all winter i freeze them in bags of twenty

Seen them bags but it looks a right clart preparing them so never bother.
I bought 2 mackeral on a plastic tray yesterday for £1:09. Them two macky caught more fish than £7 worth of rag and £2:50 bag of razer.
Whities and flatties go mad for mackeral.

I used frozen cooked prawns in the Humber on Monday and had two nice flounders and three rockling in a four hour session, chaps either side of me had nowt while I was there..:)

Last year i bought some cooked clams at this same market didnt know they were cooked till later like they come in a half shell. So i shelled them and mixed them with raw ones let them stew all together in the juices for a couple of Days then froze them. They are deadly off some of the rock marks around here after some big seas.

Morrisons Mussells dont have much in them but had loads of cod off them... - can you be bothered to shell them. Look fantastic on the hook and better than any frozen bait..lad's who get their own might scoff, but if you aint got the time to collect yer own, they are OK

There is a few Chinese supermakets in stowel street just off bath lane is the best one ive never looked in a one I must admit for fishing bait but I know they have freezers full of all weird and wonderfull things. I will check it out next time I am in, My mate buys boxes of squid from them for around £1-£2 a box he had some on the boat the last time we were out. I must admit one of the pieces of mackeral I used on his boat the last time had me 7+ fish on the same piece I used a largish slice near the tale end. The lass in morrisons Thought I was mad buying a fish to take fishing and all in it was 91p and i cut it into about 7 or 8 pieces.

i get the live mussels from the grainger market. cheap as chips, i just shell 3 or 4 and thread them round a baiting needle and whip them on with bait elestic ,this gives a good meaty bait added to a few juicy lug! nice cod bait..the small razor are good also.
