being inn a fishing club there is a def notice of catch weights by anglers, this is in most clubs in this area, yet there are reports of large quantitys of cod just 3 mile out reported by the commercial lads who are unable to land these at the moment,
as for the club iam in the weight this time last year for the leader was over 100lb.the leader at the moment has less than 50lb.yes we have fished more or less the same comps but this is reported from club to club.anyone else think it strange that loads offshore but nowt at the shore edge even when sea is on there are only limited pockets of fish.
is there too much feed just out by to stop the fish coming in to feed.???
but south of whiby they are reporting bumper catches from the shore some catching 50lb in a sesh.

I think what yr sayin is true mate. I think there is a lack of food for them on the north east coast to bring the shoals in and when they do its over in a day or 2. Thats why i think we catch on the first decent sea and day after when it dies but struggle if it lasts for more than 2-3 days (personal oppinion). Might be wrong like but just a suggestion.

Maybe the commercials are saying there are plenty of fish so that it stands them in good stead when the quotas are allocated by Europe? The government spend around £30 million a year to scientists who tell them there should be a cod ban because of lower numbers of fish and yet ignore them and listen to the commercials who tell the opposite story!

Similarly like the angling press said we were going to have a bumper season, so we buy their magazines and yet what has this year produced? The same as the past 4-5 years small shoals, that if you are in the right place at the right time there are fish. Marks that would always produce on the right tide are barren. I was speaking to one of the Alwick club members on Sunday night who as far back as I can remember has always been in the top five in the league, and won the title on numerous occasions. He's 3rd bottom at the moment!

I gave up fishing in the Alnwick Club as I started to notice that even the top anglers were struggling to catch when conditions weren't ideal, as I couldn't see the point of spending good money for nothing. I only go out now when the sea is up and am now upto 4 cod out of 20 sessions. Funny, I think I've fished more this season, around the best tides/seas and had fewer fish.

Look at the recreational boat catches in the summer, as far as I am aware they hardly set the world on fire. So I don't think the fish are there.

Shore catches have been abysmal up this way, and I don't think we can blame it on the cod feeding further out as there have been many really good seas that should have pulled the fish inshore and should have produced good bags of fish and just haven't.

Bear in mind that down on the Yorkshire Coast there is a no trawl zone around Flamborough Head, and shore anglers were doing really well this time last year as well. This was brought up at the meeting in Newbiggin.

just caught the end of an article on bbc news this morning? im sure it said that the commercials have got increased quotas from the north sea??

They have upped their allocation by 30%, but bear in mind that if they are discontinuing discards, then this 'shoild' mean they have less days at sea, but are allowed to keep more cod. Business as usual then eh?
