How many lads fished the river in this era...both upriver marks down to the mouth of the river?just wondering was there much difference in the catches that we get now.Was there any significant catches that anyone can re-call?,thanks chaps.

heck of a difference, we used to get a spring run, anytime you wanted fish you just popped down and pulled in a dozen, some days you spent the time you where there putting fish back one after another, and those on the old ferry landing got even more, fresh crab was a must and frozen for the coalfish, great fun at the tin sheets "now the lifeboat station" loads of good coalfish there on the flood. Further up during the winter stacks of colding, and flounders the Tyne was paved with them especially Sept to Oct

used to get some massive bags of codlings off the old velva wooden jetty.
oh and the canche was the best 2 down 2 up river shot imho,had bags of codlings 30 plus on there

ive seen cod up too 9lb at the old turning circle behind gateshead stadium-them were the days it was great

Pretty much as Alan described, I used to fish the ferry landing a lot in my teens - the spring run was probably the main reason for freezing crab down, I never used to use it much otherwise in the winter back then. Used to be good early morn on a sunday, especially if it was good & frosty - never got any big fish but some good bags.

fished it myself in the eighties ice house area and rubber plant mark used to do well april and may two very good months for codling.

north shields ferry landing was the hot shot on a sunday morn before the ferry started.

never fished there now for quite a few yrs but cant see why it shouldnt still fish.with or without a panel pin.

one thing that sticks in my mind fishing the river as a teen was the size of those spider crabs.....never seen one for years now
and even i use to bag up with codling and coalies then

i used to make me hks out of panel pins yrs ago there are many things you can use a panel pin for. cu panel pin

i got lots of cod and big ones from the coal shoots in front of the gas plant at howden there was a jetty up river of the bergan quay called the dolphin that was a good shot

aye,happy days.Remeber seeing some good fish coming out the river when i was a youngun.

We used to get some good haddock off the Dolphin, with fish to about 3lbs. also as has been mentioned plenty of codling. When the coal boats were in , one especially was the "Dame Catherine Haslett", we used to go aboard and fish off the stern which was near the galley, the chap on duty used to make us bacon sandwiches and mugs of tea. Oh!, happy days.

the wooden jetty at velva liquids was a favourite spot of mine along with the vidor batteries jetty,bergen quay,esso jettys,rubber company and the ferry landing loads of codling ... all no longer fishable ...
