This is getting ridiculous now......

the best way to fish for mackerel is light tackle, think fresh water tackle, light feeder rod 3lbs line straight through with a small float and shot, drag of on your reel and a size one barbless hook and when you hook one watch it go of like a steam train and you can't just haul it in you have to play the fish which takes skill , yes skill when your mackie bashing and I guarantee you won't get a better fight pound for pound from any fish, fresh or sea water so don't knock fishing for mackerel just change the way you fish for them. mackerel are a noble little fighting fish and deserve a lot more respect than they get from sea anglers.

Agree 100%, great sport on light tackle.

Sad thing is, and its really sad. You dont see the mackie bashers out and about to use there bait

They say mackerel is brain food? Theyre definitely not eating the mackerel so what are they doing with them?

Agree 100%, great sport on light tackle.

Thats the way id do it if I went for them. Makes more sence to me to fish for them that way as its all about the sport which at the end of the day thats wat fishing is not hauling them in on 30lb line its easy that.never been mackkie fishing since I was a younging 15 year ago its not for me like. But I wouldnt nock it its fishing still.i just hate the time of year coz folk cum out with no sense and think they can act in a way that is a total descrase to fisherman. Im all for ppl fishing but with common sense its no good turning up sumwere and totaly taken the pi $$ out of the sport.anyway sounds like its been a canny year with plenty mackerl turning up for the ppl that like to catch them wich is a good thing..

Totally agree, its great sport and for their size you wont get a better fight off many if any fish that we're likely to catch

Just a bit sad the way people go about it tbh

If I need a few quickly for bait, I'll think nothing of chucking out the daylights, get what I need then clear off. That's rare though - most of the time I like to float fish for them (especially in the dark with a glow-stick on the float) 10lb line and long, light rod & it's great fun. Also, wading out at the top end of Blyth beach later in the season when they come right in to the beaches with the fly rod - 4lb flourocarbon tippet & a large fly or one of those tiny artificial sand-eels. I'd rather get a pound mackerel on the fly than a 4lb stocked trout any day - I decided to play one till it was tired one day, but after 25 minutes or so the fish was still going like stink and I was getting knackered! I'd love to get one of those 3lb-plus fish that seem to be knocking around this year on the fly, I bet that'd be absolute class!

Its the oil that keeps them going. They burn oil in the muscles instead of carbs like white fish do. They could probably go for hours on light line

it is silly really. locally I went to go for a couple of hours fishing last night and thought i'll try newbiggin bay because its never that busy down there. pulled up to park and looked down and the whole bay was lined with adults/kids with rods in there hands casting both into the water, up the beach, sideways - wherever really! dangerous to say the least. there also appeared to be a cue for the 'best spots'?
I thought sod this and when to Cresswell. I was the only one there. 3 hours peaceful solitude sadly not even a fish broke the calm. better this than being involved in mass slaughter of mackerel.

That's interesting to know mate - and would explain the longest recorded battle with a bluefin tuna of 62 hours!
