It's a disgrace, but legal! There is no MLS (minimum landing size) for skate or rays, which is plain Stupid!
All the minimum sizes need to change!
The MLS for cod needs upping by at least 20cm, just to get them big enough to breed!
How much flesh is on a 35cm Tommy?

yep gotta agree wiv ya there rocker mate but what i dont understand is if there is no mls on them well why not take the whole fish to the quay. I might be a bit thick here after a few tinnies so can someone plz enlighten me ????

I've just rang defras dept of fisheries at north sheilds, and they confirm that in "our area" there is no MLS for thornbacks.
Other areas have restrictions on thornies but we don't.
Am I the only one angry about this?
The staff at defra fisheries were great btw.

If they have been caught in the nets most of them will be dead any way so why not sell them ????? or would ya's want them to put them back dead which ya's would not be happy about it either.

Plus if there was a minimum landing size they would of all went back dead out at sea any way so why not sell them.

The problem with rays skates and even flat fish is that very small fish can be caught in a relitivly large mesh size you to the morphology/shape. So are a massive bycatch speicies. If you look at how big a mesh has to be for a 5lb cod, maybes a 20cm hole, where a 5lb ray the hole will have to be +50cm in diameter.

I think it is a shame but these fish have been caught in nets and so probs landed dead... they trawlers are either going to throw them back dead or let someone have a meal and make tens of pence off them....

I think let them get on with the job. Dumping the carcases means it just gets eaten/decomposed and starting again at the 1st ecological step.

Food for thought people, dont get sucked in by menising looking images.

Minimum sizes

Ican remember being on the fish quay in Sunderland around twenty years ago, with a mate, who knew just about everything regarding fish and fishing. We went over to a stall where an acquaintance of his was selling fish. While they spoke i looked at a large box of very small thornbacks which could'nt have measured any more than eight inches or so across the wings. After they finished their conversation, and we were walking away,i asked my mate how come he was selling fish that size.He told me what many of you have stated,no minimum size.Itold him to hang on a minute, went back to the stall and asked how much they were.Ican't in all honesty remember how much he asked, what i do remember it was ridiculously cheap, and he was pleased just to shift some.A lot of these fish were lifting their tails and generally moving and twitching,so i bought half a dozen or so for virtually coppers, then chucked them into the dock.
Chances are they probably died anyway, but it made me feel just a little bit happier anyway..

Lets face it lads, some think it`s ok, a think it stinks, some1 somewhere has bought a box of wings(legally), they don`t know what size(age)the fish was, but after been `winged` and disgarded, the carcase has washed up.
now, joe public, not david, walking his dog, and child, will see these dead fish, look along the beach, see an angler, and it`s us 2 blame. see me point.

100% agree.
Anglers impose size limits on species the commercial boats dont!
I hate the way the commercial lads fish, with the disgards and whatever.
Basically killing untargeted species. It needs sorting imo. Not giving MLS for a species is basically saying we dont give a sh*t about that species because its of lesser food value, or its simply in the way!
Now they talking about letting trawlers land everything, and having no MLS at all?
This along with skippers who don't even own a boat, or can't be arsed to fish, being allowed to keep and sell their quotas to other skippers??
I've nothing against most commercial boats, and don't know the answer. But I would like to think things can change for the better?

Yes mate i have seen it ya dont buy rays hole ya only buy the wings thats why they have been took off who ever has bought them has just took the wings and dumped the bodies in the tyne if ya go to asda and ask of a ray or skate they will only show the wing not a full fish.

I totally get what your saying eddie, and agree to an extent that its better to sell a dead fish than not. But thornies arnt a species that would suffer in a net. Being that they normally sit motionless on the sea bed! My gamble is they could have been returned alive! Maybe this is how desperate our fishery is becoming?

Why aye they have taken the bits ya eat now if it was loads of hole rays on the beach dead now that would get me back up.

the thing is when ya live next to a fish quay ya going to see things like this washed up.

Do ya filet ya cod when ya catch them if so what do ya do with the head do ya eat it or put it in the bin. ?????

A trawler will pick up any thing mate from motionless fish to big rocks.

I know mate.

I could throw a stone on that beach from where I live. It's not exactly longsands.

I think theres a few that need to take up a different hobby if they don't like seeing filleted fish!
