be careful tonight if anyone is fishing on the high tide at 1:45am on 30th there has been a tidal surge warning on the radio... summat to do with the pressure and wind up towards norway forcing the sea down towards us quicker....
just keep an eye out in the dark for those rogue waves as the sea is building as well

Thanks for that info Paul, I have seen this happen first hand some years ago and was exactly as you described.
I was fishing the beach at Lynemouth(my 2nd home in the winter) it was a smashing day sunny with a light westerly wind,there was a slight northerly swell rolling in maybe 1mts.
It was quite a big tide and there was about 1hr to go to high water,I had my 4x4 parked up at the high tide mark and was enjoying a good days fishing with a few cod lying under the back wheels of the motor which I had caught.
I then noticed the swells where getting bigger by the minute,so I moved the motor further up the beach but as got to high water the swells were massive,something as big as 4mts as washing right over the high tide mark.
I was starting to get a bit worried by now because I couldn't move the motor any further up the beach. it was up against the high cliff.
Still the swells got bigger and were now washing up to and under the motor,the tide was now 1hr after hw but still kept coming.
A couple of the travellers came over with there pickup wagon and offered help,but there was nothing they could do.
The tide did leave and the motor was ok but was a close call indeed.
I found out later that a deep low pressure had developed high up in the north sea near Norway and the north flow of these waves came all the way down our coast line and I think did lots of damage further south down on the east coast that weekend.

That must have been pretty scary Harry, something I suppose that could happen any time without any warning. When I was out last night I managed to find a comfy rock to sit on, but it was with my back to the sea, something I really hate doing. if Keith had not been standing looking over my shoulder I would never have sat there.

I fished the Alcan a lot of years ago and we were half way along the beach at the narrowest part when the waves started getting much bigger. We moved quickly without even reeling in and just got away when a wave cleaned the whole area where we had been standing, very scary.

Yes I was very worried Jim,I'Ve fished this beach for years but in all that time that weekend was so unusual because of the way the tide just kept coming,I do believe that it was news headlines down on the Norfolk coast causing lots of damage to the sea defences from Bridlington down to Norfolk and I think there was loss of property as well.
The way things are changing with the climate and weather patterns this will be come more common.

was at lynemouth today and the sea came right over the boulders in places , so we decided to leave along with about 7 other anglers its not worth risking your life for ,was really surprised no fish showed up just one of those things

That was one of the problems...the shipping forecast for the tyne was light west winds..sea condition smooth increasing slight, I almost didn't go because of poor weather( for the shore angler)BUT 200 odd miles away north east this was a bit different.
I would guarantee that weekend some of the boats out from peterhead to Norfork wouldn't have expected them sea conditions,one of them times when we get caught out I suppose.
There was no warnings.........

Stood on a rock edge at Cambois last night and noticed that the distant white surf on the outer reef had seemingly disappeared...took me a few seconds to realise that the surf had been replaced by a mini black wall of higher than average wave - now I acknowledge this was no tsunami but nevertheless my heart did skip a beat or two faster as I watched like a rabbit in the headlights as this thing got closer...

As it was all I got was a soaking, but it could have been a lot worse - I moved back a number of yards not long after that

...maybe a precursor?

Tony that is horrible mate and I know exactly how you felt. I fished the Sumps at the Sluice a few years ago and there was a bit of a sea running but nothing massive. I put my waders and smock on, walked down to the small fence you step over to get down to the mark and stood and watched the rocks. I lit a cig and smoked it down while I was there and there wasn't a wave went near the sumps that was a baddun. I walked back to the car picked up my box, rod, rodstand and bucket and walked onto the sumps.

I was halfway on when the wave hit and I jumped up onto the highest point and braced myself, it was about crotch high but if I had been a couple of paces back it would have been over waist high and I would have been down I think. It was followed closely by a second wave. The worst thing about it was my headlight shining on the white water as the wave broke, I could hardly see. I admit I panicked and ended coming off the mark the long way round but at least I made it off. That really scared me, I don't think I have ever been as frightened in my life.

i have been offshore and watched waves come from nowhere, some of them have been on the rather large side.

best to stay in doors at that time tonight, just in case.

watched a programme a while back, about rogue waves, it showed that these waves are more common than we think and exactly how they come about.

my only experience of similar was fishing a rockface off the lleyn penisular, with mates many summers ago, we got there the water had a slight movement, got down the cliffs and for some reason we decided to fish a platform above were we initially were going, we set up cast out and all sat around having a fag, next thing one of the lads was shouting, the water had dropped away by a fantastic amount, we could see a rock we had never seen but often hooked up on, next we are looking at a wall of water coming back, thank god we did not go to the normal place lower down, no ifs or butts we would have been dead, that came out of a near flat sea
