Found this on the internet here The Cod and this is what it says....

Cod are sometimes sorted into four size ranges for the purposes of sale, namely cod, sprag, codling and small codling, but more usually into two sizes only, cod and codling. The following are the generally accepted lengths for each size range, but the dividing line between cod and codling is changed a little from time to time at individual ports to match the market demand to the size offish available:

four sizes:

cod 76cm & over}cod
sprag 63-75cm }cod
codling 54-62cm }codling
small codling 30-53cm }codling

So based on length... under 63cm is codling, 63cm or over is cod.

According to this table 63cm (25 inches) is about 5lb, so over 5lb is cod and under 5lb is codling...

I always thought it was 5lb!

My best from shore was just under 6lb so this means I have also never caught a "proper cod"
