Headed for South Shields, Sandhaven beach last night and was surprised to find a nice sea on, it looked a bit big for the beach so I headed for the nearest available high mark which was Trow point at the Southern edge of Sandhaven beach. I've not fished from this spot for many years so wasn't really expecting much at all, how wrong can you be, it turned out to be a cracking evening's fishing.
I was joined by another angler, who had a biteless cast and then left with immortal words "when I go the fish will come on, happens every time'' No sooner had he disappeared, you guessed it, the fish started to bite.
Some nice size Coalies were first on the scene, I caught eight to 40cm.
Then the Flatties started to bite so I reduced my rig size down to size 2, flapper rigs baited with mackeral strip and hooked some Flounder and a Dab.
Seconds after casting out again I had a bigger bite on my scratching rig, a real rod rattler and hooked into a much heavier fish which turned out to be a 4lb Codling, my bait must have landed right next to it's head! This fish took my Mackeral strip bait on a tiny hook, this was when my problems started as I then had to haul it safely up 30ft of cliff!, somehow it stayed on but it did seem like an eternity as it was coming up.
A 54 cm Codling, jammy or what?
So twelve fish in total over high tide, this turned out to be a really enjoyable session, but I've got to admit it was also a really unexpected one to.
Tightlines, Dave.
