Tynemouth flatties 31/03/16 (Plaice?)

Mucking about on Long Sands with my boy - few bits of ragworm and some bluey from the freezer. Good fun. Had 4 flatties, the biggest 1lb. All flounders except this one - maybe - I had a good look at it, bony head, shape, very vivid spots that the picture doesn't really show up. Is it a plaice or just a flounder doing a good impression of a plaice?? (All the fish were battle scarred and spent and skinny - and all from my favourite mark - around Barge Bottom at L/W) Nice afternoon in the sun :D

If it had the Klingon headgear then it is a Plaice - impossible to tell from your photo as the head is shaded. That said square tail fin would suggest a plaice as well...

Here's a sunnier look at the "plaice".. and one of the spent flounders n all.

4 flounders it is then.... ;)... It was one of those daft wee sessions where I was really just mucking about with the family. We were going to go to Druridge but didn't have the time so just pooped down the road to Tynemouth and dodged the dog-walkers and surfers for an hour or two. Just shows what's there in the gulleys even after the codling are gone.

The simplest way to tell the difference is look at the belly.
A Flounder is bright white,Plaice has a hint of white and the Dab is practically see through.
And they all can have spots on there backs.......:p
