Usan Trip 2013

Just back from Ferryden after our annual holiday. Weather was iffy, with the rest of Britain basking in the 80's and us mist covered for much of the week. Anyway we started at some of the usual marks we've fished before around Usan but we couldn't get away from codling, all around the 1lb mark



After a couple of days we were off to Boddin Point where the fish got a bit bigger:



Being here on a big tide is fantastic:



We managed one decent day with the spinning gear resulting in a dozen or so mackeral (no photos - I suspect you all know what they look like), poodlers up to 2lb and the biggest pollack making 5lb





We tried 3 new marks - 2 on the south side of Boddin resulted in no fish but considerable sweat as we took on the nettle and thistle ridden 100 feet cliffs. The third took us to Auchmithie which is another heavy weir covered shot. We managed 10 codling in 2 sessions, best about 4lb but one or two better fish lost on the way in.



The mist was with us for most of the week, producing some AC type opportunities:

thanks for report david, atleast plenty fish to be had, ps i suspect? yours were using crab, i know fish bait very good up there in winter time,? did uses actualy try any fish baits or even mussels. tight lines.

Good stuff David - I actually prefer those kind of days as I rather easily begin to resemble a lobster if the sun's out all the time!

Hi Reg - all crab (fresh and frozen) mixed with mussel.

Stayed in The Roomies in Ferryden - good b&b and a pub that should be a sit com 100 yards away.

Good stuff David, its better fishing in those conditions rather than being baked alive, and any fish you keep going off.

Couple of points Chris
......I can cast about 100 yards with a crab bait on - far enough for most marks on the rock ends
......it's much easier to cast 10 - 20 yards with a scarborough accurately than with a multiplier (imho)
......in the pub in Ferryden there is a wonderful mix of the wild and wacky and amongst them is an incredibly intelligent chap who was brought up in the village, left to make his way, but returns each year for his holidays. He spends his time looking for lobsters (we both pick the big tides for our holidays) and he fishes for what he needs for the table. He informs me he never casts out, just fishes straight down and gets fish up to 4lb at his feet. One day he got 4 lobsters out of the weirs and saw at least 6 codling sniffing about for feed.
I remember Gogs, a fisherman from Edinburgh, whose avatar had underneath it "They're under your feet". Makes you think!

hi dave,have only managed 84 yards on my scarboro set up with a plain lead without bait(I tested it against my modern gear)the old setup is,still the most pleasurable way to catch fish(I have your book)ive got a back caster that bends like a banana but for short casting into kelptheres nothing like it,as you say you cant really cast the up to date stuff into the kelp 20 to 30 yards out with any control...just because its old doesn't mean it doesn't work,ive not had the nerve to try a domestos bottle for float fishing for Pollack though,but there is time,cheers chris

Excellent report and some good fishing. Unusual to see an old outfit being used. But I suppose off rocks into deep water u don,t need great distances
