hi all!
was just wondering if herring is a good bait for fishing the tyne
you can get it cheap at the local supemarkets which might come in handy
if i cant get my beloved maki
any info lads![]()
Can't see why not mate, i once used it up oban and got a doggy a chuck on it and there is doggy in the tyne according to reportsI seriously think it's worth a shot for other species too.
i fished with herring alot and it is definetley superior for tipping off worm baits to mackerel, for the flounder and plaice, the coalfish love it as well,it went out of fashion, but us lads now have the supermarket as a fantastic resource, alot of lads down south where i live are using whole herring flappers for the conger and bass instead of mackerel,it is a bit more delicate and may need some elastic cotton, for flatties in south east scotland last year i had two rods out and the herring outfished ragworm two to one![]()
cheers mate was thinking i would have to use bait elasticit looks a bit less robust than makeral

Well RL83 M8 i used herring a few years ago but i used to cocktail it up with Lug Ragworm and whatever i could use with it and i had good results catching cod off Blyth pier in the1960/s and some good whiting too if fish are hungry they will take anything and thats for sure so i recommend you should use it and find out for yourself and its good on boats too.![]()
If yer can get yer mitts on fresh herring (from a wet fish shop for example) you can get away without using elastic, just thread it through the hook a few times and it should be ok. Having said that though a few turns of elastic wouldn't come in wrong if giving it a good blast.
hi mate, herring in my experience outfishes bluey, the bluey is more expensive from tackle shops and is basically the same species, get it from your supermarket mate, places like tescos have to have it landed and to the shop within two days, its fresh stuff, but ive also found herring that is a bit smelly better than the fresh stuff, ive used it off the boat tipping hokkais, but the other guys got the same using mackerelcheers mate was thinking i would have to use bait elasticit looks a bit less robust than makeral
