Velvets

Had a few hours down Whitburn today looking for Velvets. I couldn\'t believe how many there were, the only problem being not many were peeling!!

There were some massive velvets though, and I found the biggest shore crab I\'ve seen for a long time.

Jeff, I\'ve let them loose in your garage mate :D

Gordon never mind the rocks mate, if they were three feet accross I wouldn\'t be going further east than Newcastle lol.
Never tried them Mark, just because I havn\'t been anywhere where they serve them mate.
You could just be right there David.

Jim.

keep hearing good and bad reports from people who use them :exclam: seems some rate them and use them all the time others have tried and not got out, there an excellent bait for bass from what i\'ve been told,i have a fair few of them peeled and frozen ready for the onslaught :P

I have a lad who comes in the shop who does this...............

Put 4 Velvets (fresh if you have them or defrosted frozen if not)in a plastic bag with two capfuls of wintergrade peeler crab oil

Give the bag a good shake and freeze them down

The process of freezing draws the peeler oil into the crabs and gives them scent for longer.

Apparantley he picked this tip up from a coarse angler who uses this process for his baits. He reckons the velvets catch more this way with them holding scent for longer.

Dont know if it works but he swears by it!!!

:D :D

had a good few last summer and they did work well.
never bothered looking this year(to many shore crab to tend to)
wish i had spent some time looking for some and also edibles, will probably miss them this winter :(

Got to be careful with Edibles down here Gordon, you don\'t know who\'s watching you ;)

Got a nice jelly soft meat pie this morning though ;)

Davy,

I\'ll help you try them out if you want....I\'ll buy the worm, you bring the crab...!!!

If they are in my garage our lass would have bleached them by now. Anything left unattended is either thrown in the bin or thoroughly cleaned.

Jeff.
