as above how many of you lot have done the radio course for vhf dsc ,

was listening to the radio today and the standard is lacking .

did my course for 60 squid money well spent me thinks.

I did mine with deepvee training at royal quays as it's a legal requirement advise given on the ofcom website I do personally agree with the course as it keeps all to a standard but I would still rather see someone with it for safety reasons at least those that know how could help on hearing a shout for help!!

Ps over but not out lol

did mine 20 odd years ago - no DSC back then, and for the LRC you had to know morse code as well - wouldn't have a clue now about morse

it is worth doing but personally I think having a radio and no operators licence is better than not having a radio at all

the law states you must have a vhf/src ticket to use radio its £70 well spent, it takes 6 hours of time well spent,
i here lads on the radio and they dont have a clue,
i was in a boat comp on another site i asked the lad in charge for his mmsi number as not to clog ch 16 he said he could not use it ,
wonder just how many ppl know how to use dsc in a real situtation

hi

did mine last year at sunderland marina for about £90.

mind im ashamed to say it but i've forgotten it already...never even used my handheld.

do people report to the coastgaurd when going out?

I had thought about re-doing mine, just to get the full benefit of DSC, spoke to a few folks that have done it in the last few years and most of them said that the DSC content is minimal, and apart from the distress procedures, doesn't touch on all the other facilities of DSC at all

posted this link before:

radio

am i right in thinking that if there is a qualified radio op on vessel, some one who is not qualified may operate the radio?

friend of mine is the cox of the barra lifeboat, had this conversation with him last year.

his take on it, and the CG ops he's talked to about it is, that they are not really concerned about wether someone has done the course and is licenced to operate a radio or not. They would much rather every boat had a radio fitted.

That attitude might be a bit different if you lived/operated out of the solent and that bit of the south coast, thousands more boats down there and some are complete tools

The coastguard had to put a request out on Jonathon Ross's radio show a month or 2 back. One bright spark had keyed his mike on 16 and left it open next to his radio so his mate in a nearby boat could listen to wossy. And its not the first time that has happened down there

Thing is, it turns out the culprit actually turned out to be a licenced radio op as well. Clearly there's no accounting for the nobhead factor in these matters

reporting to the CG on your way out/in?? Don't think many folks do it in these parts. If you were passage making I'd recommend it, simple CG call - 'routine traffic, vessel name, location, destination, course and ETA'

then a 'routine traffic, arriving at destination, and a thank you when you get there'

we liased with em every 2 hours on the trip from inverness to the tyne, if we forgot to call it in bang on 2 hours, they'd give us a shout. Quick exchange of position, bearing & speed' then thats that for 2 hours. Its no bother to them at all, and they are very helpful and friendly

hey

hey

why not make a video of the leaving the tyne calling the cg then coming back
calling the cg simples - safety traffic .

might make people more aware of the procedure slinky get your hd cam at the
ready ..... !:o out ...:yltype:
