We decided to try fishing the ground and headed out about 09:30hrs. Lovely flat sea but the forecasted 5mph SW looked more like 10-15mph. Very small tides and clear water so we thought it would be Ok.
The fishing could be best decribed as steady. There were plenty of Mackeral and by the end of the day a decent amount of Codling, Launce and a single Ballan Wrasse.
We fished with small 2/3 oz Pirks, shads on booms and the usual daylight type rigs. Always willing to try things so I rigged up the launce as live baits but didn't get a single thing....!!!! By far the most successful rig of the day was the baited flowing trace. We used the usual assortment of Crab, Rag, Lug, Mussel and Squid. Flowing traces accounted for approx 90% of the fish. All fishing was done on the drift so we got through quite a few traces. The ground we were fishing today was particulary rough, (sudden drop off from 3Fa to 9Fa in a very short distance) and we also located some new ground towards the end of the day that held quite a few fish....we will definitley be back there.
By the end of the day we ended up with approx 20 Codling to 6lbs between the usual crew of three so not a bad day. I was the worst angler of the day with just two Codling and a single Wrasse
Skipper is back on form with some great Sausage and Bacon sandwiches. We also experimented with Chilli Pizza which was good but we need to refine the cooking /warming up process.
Norman...we gave you a shout on the VHF but just read another post to say you were resting Saturday...!!! Also think we saw the Boys on the wrecks just off Sheilds.
Cheers,
Jeff.
