Yea I remember the thread now fishing the wansbeck I used to love going down there as a lad it was very popular then lots to catch like you said flatties, coalies and eels and even used to see the odd sea trout trying to get back up the river.

Kipper on the wear was leathal 40 year ago but it was proper smoked when you would go to fish shop and ask for a pair of kippers not like the dyed rubbish now.

yeah glad im on this forum now the info is awesome from all users who help and yeah i seen loads of fish taking flies from the top so could only imagine them being sea trout

nice one! iv'e had loads of great sessions in the river mouth, one time i had over 40 fish! flatties and coalies. also im nearly 100% thats a coalie not a whiting mate :)

The kipper looks more like 'smoked cod' (painted stuff) and I think the whiting looks like a coley. Anyhoo it is very interesting that the unusual bait worked! I would never had tried it myself, but the proof is in the results!! Well done!

Canny result mate. It goes to show that trying something different can pay dividends, something a lot people of won't do. Nice one.

Lol ooh well stil canny new to sea fishing so thanx for info gunna have to get meself a species book and i mate i wudnt usually use unusual baits but the elders are wise hahaha just messin

another top bait for flatties n coalies is cooked prawns mate, that's what i had all my 40 fish on when i was there. the tackle shops would probably tell you otherwise tho :p

I mate i used to use them on the tyne opposite the copthorne hotel used to go and get the mixed cooked mussle calamari rings and prawn from tesco haha dine the job the had some big flatties out only problem was ballin them over the wall

aye i used to use them when i couldn't get any bait haha. there's loads of fuss over the best bait for this that and the other, 90% of the time most fish will scran absolutely out they bump into.

Ai ana mate they do the hob n as for what bait they take is definatley true ive used loads of stuff still caught lol aslong aa it its presented well ya laughin
