Warm water monster

codfather, there have been quite a few sightings of pilot whales as well.
Davy, Brih i actually spoke to Peter and he seemed very genuine about trying to release the fish.

Crazy stuff

I was luck enough to see a pilot whale while out fishing off saltburn last weekend and was thankfull for that, but things have been going mad lately.

Sword fish
porgy\'s
Tope
mako\'s (maybe)

Lets hope we see more of these fish pictured on peoples boat,s after being caught on rod n reel and then released back to be caught another day.
Would need some serious heavy gear for some of them tho

I cant agree more. Over recent weeks whilst planning the shark trip I got many reports on unusual things.

Whitby boats regularly see Minke whales on grounds at 9 miles. A yachtsman was telling us about an Orca he saw whilst approaching the bell at whitby. A 50lb tope was caught by a dutch yachtie whilst anchored in hartlepool bay waiting for the tide to enter the marina the weekend before last. Malcolm the skipper of seaspray hooked a tope whilst out with a party on a wreck. Unfortunately he lost it at the surface but it gave the other anglers on the boat a thrill and managed to tangle most of the lines up.

The story that intrests me the most is two sightings of large skate swimming by the boat at whitby. The timing would be about right for them to have recovered after being wiped out in the seventies and hopefully as more people start fishing with tope baits they may hook into one. very unlikely they will land one though on tope gear.

I like this bit in the report...

\"Mr Dent, a father of two, apparently tried to free the swordfish, but its long beak was damaging his net, so he had to kill it.\"

Yep, well worth killing it then

I agree Davey, killing it was a disgrace, lying about why you killed is pathetic

Well to be honest, well hmmm, what would i have done, with the price of billfish steaks in this country and they tasting so nice, yep bopped it and eaten it.

And if you knocked a tiger over and there was a possibilty it\'s claws might damage your paintwork you\'d kill it with a brick and sell bits of it to your neighbours or chinese medicine men. Crap attitude

no charlie would have taken it to the vets. said nothing about selling anything just taking and eating what you catch, not for profit. Do you not keep any fish you catch for the pot.

He killed it because it was damaging his net. Its still that a crap reason to kill it, I don\'t care if its £100 a pound in the shops. Maybe\'s he was scared people wouldn\'t believe him that it was in his nets - so what! He knows it was there.

If I came on here with a pic of a dead Porbeagle, Tope or Skate, there\'d be hell on, absolute hell on. This is a fish thats as rare as rocking horse sh*t, and for some reason it has ventured into these waters. Is this a prelude to an annual migration - we don\'t know.

What I do know is there is now one less swordfish because the fish had the audacity to try and free itself from a net!

Difference is Alan he said he tried to free it first, so he obviously didn\'t kill it for the pot.

Davy i was replying to charlies reply to my post at least i think he was replying to my post.
in reply to yours Davy, if the lad had to bop the fish, being a commercial fisherman why should he not sell it. Call it his yearly, well prodably life times bonus, bet you wouldnt refuse your christmas bonus from work. Obvioulsy it would have been better returning it for the next guy to catch and keep it, no doubt somebody along the chain would have. And the fish is only rare here they catch them by the ton off spain and portugal and other waters, that is where the damage is being done. The thing to do is not returning the odd fish that would prodably make little difference but get the mass slaughter of this type of fish stopped before they are on the verge of extinction like other species. The first step is to join \"save our sharks\" and take everything one step at a time.

p.s. and to allay any fears my post that seems to have upset charlie was meant to be tongue in cheek as many realised, if i caught it or other fish like that i would have certainly released it, thats after taking photos, as everybody knows my favourite fish is mackerel, mind bill fish do taste very nice, how many times have you and charlie eaten it on holiday Dave.

Didn\'t get the tongue in cheek nature of your post Alan, my fault, I was pissed for a change and I apologise. I don\'t know the full story either but as it stands I still think ithe right thing wasn\'t done. Whilst attempting to net Salmon (A truly fantastic creature, most likey on it\'s way home to spawn after an epic and mysterious journey), man discovers an incredibly rare species for our waters, and universally acclaimed game fish, trapped in his net ......................

and kills it :(

People shake their heads and suck their teeth when billfish are killed by locals in areas where these fish are much more abundant. I disagree with the argument that says if he hadn\'t someone else would have, so that\'s sort of OK. Apply that argument in a wider context and we end end up in all kinds of trouble and the world would go mad. Err Hang on a second ................ :casstet:
