Currently getting my ear bent because I've managed to get hold of a mere 50 frozen crab...

"but you've got all those others in the freezer going to waste"

Sheesh....quiet diplomacy is currently the better option I feel (meaning keep my head down and my mouth shut until it blows over:rolleyes:)

is crab the "must have bait" its cracked up to be ? ie if 2 anglers are fishing the same mark and one is using say rag/mackie cocktail and the the other peeler will the fish go for the crab only & pass by the cocktail or the crab first because of the scent but would take the cocktail anyway ???? i realize fish know that seasonal changes happen & new food sources appear water temp changes days are lighter for longer etc but what are everyones thoughts ??

Crab isn't a must have bait BUT it's nice to have the option coz there are times when it does appear to be favoured by the fish in deference to other offerings...I've caught fish on worm baits when others around me are catching on crab baits so there is no hard and fast rule...

...for example...if you look at the boat report for Slinky Kate on 21st of June that is a classic example of various methods all catching in the same spot at the same time - sometimes if the fish are feeding they'll take anything in front of them...then other times?...well I'm sure you get the drift

in my personell opinion peeler crab is the best bait, and the bait to have whenever possible, in all of my years fishing it always out fishes other bait ( hence its high demand ), but like tony says sometimes fish will take any bait offered to them, i surpose its a bit like us if were hungry we will eat anything but will never pass up eating say a kit kat if its put before us.....fish are sometimes very picky like us...in general though crab allways catches more

I know how you feel Tony, my Mrs is bending my ear right now because MY fishing freezer contains about 250 frozen at the moment plus another 100 fresh which are shelled as they pop ready for the winter. One of my favorite baits without doubt, and probably one of Mr Cod's favorites too! Well worth the moaning.

Does she realise just how valuable this crab will be come the winter months. If not she may just take a mad turn and decide to defrost the freezer one day and consider the crab to be of the same value as a bag of frozen peas and chuck them out :eek::eek:...just a thought :D

Now you see there lies a potential problem becuase the freezer does need de-frosting...but I will be in attendance when it happens and I have a plan to keep the little buggers in semi frozen state for at least a few hours...it's called a "freezer bag"

...and no she does not realise the value of these things...does she not realise I'm clearly saving money in the long run?? using female logic I could therefore by myself another reel with the money I've saved ;):D
