Water Clarity

How do you guys find out if the water is clear or coloured?
I want to try some shads but don't think they will be worth using if the water is coloured. So do you tie it on and see how deep you can see it? Or is there some other way of seeing if the water is clear or not.

Just a case of looking over the side, if you can see alot of sand or if the water is brown close in, it tells you its not that good.

Last time i was out i could see my gear about 20ft under the boat easy and that was only 3 miles off, the further out i went the better it was....old saying " you dont know until you try"

I know i will be trying twin tails and pirks at the weekend..may catch may not.
