Waterproof Coat Recommendation

My 15 year old Berghaus rain coat has now packed in being waterproof and as a result, I suffered mild hypothermia on New Year's evening..not kidding here!

I'm now looking for a new fishing coat/waterproofs to wear over my waders.

If anyone has bought a cracking coat for decent money this year I'd be pleased to hear your recommendation.

fishing republic have some powerstorm jackets in for a tenner they are waterproof and fleece lined and have a hood a bargin at a tenner

Hello Jimbob,
I once waterproofed a coat, my old Titan "sponge". I bought some stuff from a camping shop that worked very well, I think that it may have been called "nyloproof" or similar.
Regards Ian.

Don't know how to?

Have a look in the the outdoor shops, Nikwax, Graingers, etc reproofer. You can either "wash it in" or spray directly on depending on which one you get. Did my smock with the Nikwax spray on and it made a hell of a difference, you could see the rain beading off.

Only costs a tenner and will bring your berghaus back to life, bet the berghaus will out last any other jacket or smock.

I think you can get stuff called Nikwax or something, that you dump in the washing machine along with your coat. Don't know if your particular jacket would be suitable for the treatment though.

As regards to something new, if you don't mind something a bit old-skool how about a Barbour coat - you used to be able to get some bargains (slight seconds) from the factory shop years ago. I've got a couple that are nigh on 30 years old & still going strong, they just need the odd re-wax now & again (easily if rather messily done!).

I've got several coats: Daiwa smock, Apollo Extreme & GRXi jackets etc. but the old Barbours are light years ahead both in resilience & waterproofness (?). Just a bit heavy & not breathable etc, but sometimes, who cares???

Cheers, Gary :)
